Chris Christie : Republican

I though Christie was different, but nope!

http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-s...bridge-scandal

Quote:
?Explosive documents? connect Christie, bridge scandal

Up until now, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) could claim some distance between his office and the scandal surrounding the George Washington Bridge. Yes, his administration apparently caused deliberate, dangerous, and paralyzing traffic last September. Yes, his administration closed lanes in secret, ignored Port Authority procedures, and crippled the community of Fort Lee.

But, the governor has said, his office wasn?t involved in any wrongdoing. There have been allegations that the governor and his team were punishing a local mayor for refusing to endorse Christie?s re-election campaign, but the evidence was circumstantial.

That is, until this morning. The Bergen Record?s Shawn Boburg published details that connect the scandal to the governor?s office in ways that raise the stakes of the controversy considerably.
A cache of private messages between Governor?s Christie?s deputy chief of staff and his two top executives at the Port Authority reveal a vindictive effort to create ?traffic problems in Fort Lee,? apparent pleasure at the resulting gridlock, and insults used to refer to the borough?s mayor, who had failed to endorse Christie for re-election.

The documents obtained by The Record also raise serious doubts about months of claims by the Christie administration that the September closures of local access lanes to the George Washington Bridge were part of a traffic study initiated solely by the Port Authority. Instead, they show that one of the governor?s top aides was deeply involved in the decision to choke off the borough?s access to the bridge, and they provide the strongest indication yet that it was part of a politically-motivated vendetta ? a notion that Christie has publicly denied.
In mid-August, just a few weeks before the lane closures, Bridget Anne Kelly, one of three deputies on Christie?s senior staff, emailed David Wildstein, the top Christie executive at the Port Authority who ordered the closures.

?Time for some traffic problems in Fort Lee,? she told him. ?Got it,? he replied.

Though the governor publicly ridiculed the very idea that his office was involved, we now know with certainty that what Christie said wasn?t true. Christie?s deputy chief of staff was directly involved in planning the incident and even received updates from Wildstein before their plan was set in motion.

Wildstein was also in frequent communication with Christie spokesperson Michael Drewniak about ?retaliating? against New York officials for re-opening Fort Lee?s closed lanes.

The same article highlights text messages between Wildstein and an unnamed official in which they mocked the traffic paralysis they imposed on Fort Lee and ridiculed the local mayor, Mark Sokolich. In reference to school buses that couldn?t help children get to school on time, Wildstein specifically wrote, ?They are the children of Buono voters.?

The revelations, the Bergen Record added, ?could prove a serious threat to Christie?s credibility.?

Ya don?t say.

Chris Christie is a stain on the human genome. But so is every other fucking cocksucker politician. Every single last one of 'em belong in the deepest recesses of hell sandwiched between the pedophiles and crooked televangelists.

Problem with Christie is... he's so fucking blimpish, there might not be room for the rest of 'em in the brimstone pit.

At first, Chris Christie tried to brush off the issue:

Quote:
Bombshell documents show that decisions that caused days of traffic jams near the George Washington Bridge ? possibly in retaliation against a Democratic mayor who wouldn't endorse Gov. Chris Christie (R-N.J.) for reelection ? reached closer to Christie than he has previously acknowledged.

Bridget Anne Kelly, Christie's deputy chief of staff, sent an August 13 email to former Port Authority Director of Interstate Capital Projects David Wildstein, a Christie ally: "Time for some traffic problems in Fort Lee."

Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich (D) had declined to endorse Christie for re-election, unlike many other Democratic municipal officials in the state.

The Wall Street Journal obtained that email and 21 other pages of emails and text messages, a series that shows coordination between the Christie administration and the Port Authority over the lane closures ? and suggests the closures were politically motivated, not part of a "traffic study."

In a text to Baroni, Sokolich had said that the problem of busing students to school was "maddening."

In a subsequent text message exchange, an unidentified person told Wildstein, "I feel badly about the kids. I guess." Wildstein replied, "They are the children of Buono voters," referring to then-State Sen. Barbara Buono, Christie's Democratic opponent in the November election.

According to the Bergen Record, the emails and messages were provided by Wildstein to a New Jersey State Assembly committee in compliance with a subpoena.

In September, it became clearer that the lane closures were a surprise to local officials and police, the media began asking questions. Christie's campaign manager, Bill Stepien, exchanged emails with Wildstein on Sept. 18. In them, he pointed the finger at Sokolich for a story that was published that day in The Wall Street Journal.

"The mayor is an idiot," Stepien wrote.

"It will be a tough November for this little Serbian," Wildstein responded, an apparent reference to the Fort Lee mayor.

National Democrats have been hammering Christie for the past month over the controversy, charging that the lane closures were political payback for a Democratic mayor who refused to endorse Christie for re-election last year. Christie has denied that charge.

Bill Baroni, the former deputy director of the Port Authority of New York and Jersey and Christie's top official at the Port Authority, has said that the lane closures were part of a traffic study. But these documents cast doubts on those claims.

Christie has previously said that no one on his legislative or campaign staff was involved in the lane closures. He also brushed off questions in December on the topic by joking that he moved the cones himself.

But as the Record describes it, the emails show that Kelly "was involved in the planning and received updates during the week of the traffic jams." Kelly also knew that Christie appointees at the Port Authority were "ignoring the Fort Lee mayor?s desperate attempts to get a reason for the sudden unannounced closures."
Chris Christie issued this statement today about Bridgegate:

Quote:
January 8, 4:40pm: Governor Christie has released a statement responding to documents linking him to lane closures around the George Washington Bridge. Via the Washington Post:

"What I've seen today for the first time is unacceptable. I am outraged and deeply saddened to learn that not only was I misled by a member of my staff, but this completely inappropriate and unsanctioned conduct was made without my knowledge.

One thing is clear: this type of behavior is unacceptable, and I will not tolerate it because the people of New Jersey deserve better. This behavior is not representative of me or my Administration in any way, and people will be held responsible for their actions."
Non-issue? Sounds like now even Chris Christie himself acknowledges that his staff/appointees fucked up big time.

Summary of the controversy.

Quote:
Can?t get a Democratic mayor to endorse you for governor? Make residents of his town sit in gridlock traffic, brag about it by email and text message, then see what happens. That?s what newly obtained documents, subpoenaed from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, suggest took place in New Jersey last fall.

The governor? Chris Christie, a Republican with his eye on a 2016 presidential bid who claims bipartisan appeal. The mayor? Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich, a Democrat who did not endorse Christie. The traffic? Three access lanes leading from Fort Lee, N.J., to the George Washington Bridge, mysteriously shutdown for four days in September of 2013. The result? Half hour bridge commutes were stretched into several hours, kids were late for school, one angry mayor, and a lot of questions.

Governor Christie claimed the closures were simply part of a local traffic study and his campaign office had nothing to do with them. In any case, Mayor Sokolich was not informed prior to the closings. Emails from his Christie?s staff to Port Authority officials show not only were they aware of the upcoming shutdown, but may have ordered it.

?Time for some traffic problems in Fort Lee,? Bridget Anne Kelly, a deputy chief of staff in Mr. Christie?s office, emailed to Port Authority official David Wildstein weeks prior to the lane closures.
?Got it,? Wildstein, an appointee and close high school friend of Mr. Christie, wrote back. Then later, as the lanes were shutdown, via the New York Times:

?I feel badly about the kids,? he texted.

?They are the children of Buono voters,? she said, referring to Mr. Christie?s Democratic opponent, Barbara Buono, who was trailing consistently in the polls and lost by a wide margin.

The Star-Ledger reports Wildstein, along with his supervisor, former Deputy Executive Director Bill Baroni, resigned from the Port Authority last month amid the growing controversy.

If Christie shut down lanes in retaliation (and that's a big if....) that would be pretty fucking childish.

I also fail to understand how this would would hurt people other than his own citizens, who use the bridge daily.

today is the biggest day, and quite possibly the last day, of his political life...his henchmen go under oath and will either lie for him - or expose his role as the one who gave the order (no chance he didn't)

Also he has to immediately fire the bitch Bridget "Time for some traffic problems" Kelly...except heres the problem - she most likely hasn't agreed to fall on her sword for the fat ass..or he would have sacked her yesterday - he must fire her and hope she doesnt sing...either way hes in a very tough spot...

His whole future rides on at least 3 people lying under oath and taking the fall (possibly criminally...felony) for him...if someone cracks and implicates him, or more emails come out that implicate him - his ass is cooked like a giant butterball turkey.

Already, with what has happened so far - he will never get the nom for repub pres in '16 - this has tainted him way too much for a party that was already turning away from him for cozying up to Obama - and if his Capos let slip that he gave the orders for the bridge closing...he will have to resign from the Governorship.

Game, Set, Match...his political career...over.

This assumes he knew about it. I wouldn't be so quick to say it 100% came to him. People in a position of power like to abuse power. This is goes down to the most menial tasks in any positions, it's really quite interesting on human behavior. Look at cops.... I'd say its 50-50 whether he actually knew or not and I tend to think he may not have known. He was beating the opponent in a landslide and I don't think he would take a risk like that. Those are her messages, not his. Dumb way to communicate it over, and leave it out there in the open that it's politically connected, which further leads me to think his staff members were moronic and did it on their own.

People, on their own, do go out and do dumb shit. If she had the authoritative power to write a text message and get it done, then she could've acted autonomously on a power trip knowing she could get it done, and smirk about the power her post contains. She was bragging in the text messages. I don't think Christie, already being a national figure head, who knows what big power he has, would've taken the same amusement. He's playing for a much bigger game.

I think it's more likely he could've been part of an original cover up if he didnt know or understand why it happened at first, and then he learned about it after. That is where I think his risk comes in, and its fairly big. For example, he looks like an idiot now for his initial denials. Either way, he can work thru it. People have done worst, and he's better than most at handling issues.

I love it when people chime in with nothing more than ridicule for the person who posted the story as if that means something. I like Christie, but he clearly fucked up here and I'm sure that he'll fire the people involved. I'd actually be surprised if they haven't already offered to resign. What would be worse for him is if he just kept denying his office was involved. I'm sure his handlers are all over it.

this is way beyond "handlers"

the shit is hitting the fan big time...and we know there is something very wrong by the fact that he didn't fire miss Kelley yesterday...if his story is true (that he knew nothing) then he would have sent her packing yesterday...so he must be lying and afraid to fire her.

If he ordered this fiasco and she spills the beans = he resigns as Gov of NJ..buh bye.

good points - we don't know yet for sure he ordered the lane closures - but the only other possibility is that the people closest to him did it - without his knowledge or permission...that seems almost impossible given the kind of Mob Don mentality his office is known to operate under.

If he has no control over his closest advisers and they run hog wild and commit crimes (this was a big crime) then his goose is cooked for a Pres run in 16 anyway...right now my money is on him losing this big and resigning from the Govship. No one in the media is talking about him losing his job..but this is Nixon revisited he's done.

Whatever the outcome, Christie will still be the only Republican presidential candidate currently worth voting for.

That's the sad truth. What's even more funny is Christie has more support from the left than he does from the right. All the far right wing bats hate him which trickles down to the rest of the party, they are all scared to have the extremist get mad at them. Any Republican that speaks bad of the whacko tea party soon gets put in the cross hairs. It's like they are the American version of the Taliban.

I've had the news on for most of the day, and I can't believe the coverage this is getting. Chris Christie seems to genuinely not have anything to do with this. If he 's lying then give him the Oscar now.

It this point it doesn't matter. Christie was "without drama" until just now. If he runs for President this will come up.

And I hate to say this... But this just sounds like something expected from a politician in New Jersey. (And before you say anything, keep in mind I was born and raised in NJ.)

cracks me up when people say this story doesnt deserve the hype...abuse of power and the misuse gov agencies to the detriment and endangerment of the public - for purely political revenge...it's a very very big deal deserving of front page headlines in every city...yes hes a very good liar but no way his staffers did this caper on their own...it reeks of his personality and style...

It's not that I don't think its a big deal...but all day coverage. This is like Benghazi for MSNBC.

I've known about this situation since when it first happened, and I was thinking about all of the lives affected by jamming up traffic in that spot for that long.

Christie is learning the "McCain Lesson"

It's what happens when Republicans get caught up by the press "liking" them.

Remember how the Dems and the media LOVED McCain? He was the "maverick" and a "good" republican.

But the very second that he became a threat to the Dems being in power they tore him down hard.

Same thing happened to Romney after he won the Republican nomination in 2012.

Now it's Christie's turn.

You would think these politicians would realize it and not keep pandering to the press and the Dems to try and be "liked".

But their egos are just too big and they start believing their own bullshit.

Trust me... all those MSNBC announcers who gushed over Christie when he hugged Obama and put the nail in the coffin for Romney? They are all about to turn on him like rabid dogs. lol

no matter how hard I try to give him the benefit of the doubt - no matter how convincing his press conference is (he is very good at gab) no matter how you slice it - it's nearly impossible to imagine any scenario where his chief lieutenants orchestrated this elaborate crime for his benefit...yet without his knowledge.

Wildstein suing to get out of testifying under oath looks very bad for Christie - if he was guilty and Christie innocent..you can bet the Governor would have him singing to the rafters.

Lets not rewrite history too much here. McCain was a maverick from the times in the 1980's when he would rail against ridiculous spending proposals and pet projects in the omnibus bill each year. His idiocy kicked in when he let some underlings pick the half term quitting governor of Alaska as his running mate. He removed himself from being any sort of threat to win over the democrats in that moment.

I still like Christie and nothing is proven that he knew anything, although I'd bet money he sure did, or at least didn't complain at all. Maybe a wink and a nod. Something would have to be proven though and politicians are good at throwing themselves on grenades to protect the big guys.

I don't know.. its kind of a big deal. If Christie's office did this, it's an abuse of power, and abuse of resources that does not even belong to them. They screwed alot of people out of alot of time, and may have contributed to the death of an elderly woman who may not have died if the EMT's could have got to her in time.

I don't care. GFY is a cool place for adult webmasters to talk about all kinds of things, politics included.

And just so you know, I actually like Chris Christie. I disagree with republican ideology overall and alot of republican politicians are dumb as posts (Palin, Bachman, etc) but Christie is a likeable guy who to my knowledge hasn't said anything that I would call "stupid". If republicans win the white house in 2016, I was hoping that it would have been won by him. But if it turns out he is directly responsible for this bridge mess, then of course he has no business being anywhere in public office.

...in fact, even if he was not directly responsible, he was responsible for the people in his office. This could still hurt his political career.

The only thing more pathetic than a Democrat is a Republican. Both sides are owned by the same interests.

Ted Cruise tanked his political future when he shut the gov down...just like Christie did when he shut the bridge down...neither will ever be pres.

and Hilary won't beat Christie because he will never get the repug nomination...he will be forced to confess and it will be all over when the fat man sings

5 Head-Scratchers from Chris Christie's Bridgegate Apology

First, the good: Gov. Chris Christie took full responsibility for his office?s part in the Bridgegate scandal today, offering a long and thorough apology to the state and national press corps. Earlier, he axed two aides he held most responsible.

But that doesn?t mean the governor came completely clean.

Here are five points Christie made the stretch the bounds of believability:

1. ?I didn?t know.?

Christie?s micro-managing is infamous. The idea that he didn?t know about this headline-grabbing operation, orchestrated by senior staffers in Trenton and top-ranked political appointees at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, is hard to believe, to say the least.

That he allowed himself to be so easily duped by those closest to him is a difficult admission for a prideful politician. It?s also ridiculously hard to take on faith.

2. ?I didn?t get it.?

Christie apologized over and over to Fort Lee and the motorists who suffered in September?s gridlock ? saying he failed to understand all the fuss over yet another traffic jam on the nation?s busiest bridge.

But the story of Fort Lee?s week in bumper-to-bumper hell hasn?t changed from the outset: The unexpected shutdown of two-thirds of the city?s GWB access lanes slowed school buses, police and ambulances - not to mention thousands of commuters. Fort Lee?s mayor had been shouting complaints to the Port Authority ? and the news media ? since Day One.

The emails pointed to those responsible for the stunt, but didn?t break any news about the damage.

3. ?I thought there was a traffic study.?

Former PA executive Bill Baroni?s flimsy cover story about a phantom ?traffic study? was, apparently, all the former U.S. Attorney needed to hear. Even today, Christie appeared confused that anyone questioned the study?s existence.

Routine traffic studies are sometimes planned for years before they?re executed, and leave a long paper trail. In this case, David Wildstein, another Christie PA appointee who resigned during the scandal, orchestrated his "research" within days. No one who oversees traffic for the Port Authority knew about it ? including its executive director, Patrick Foye, who ordered the bridge reopened. No one told cops or emergency crews on either side of the Hudson.

That Christie still buys the traffic study song-and-dance is among the least believable things he said.

4. ?I acted swiftly.?

Give Christie credit: He cut ties with his deputy chief of staff, Bridget Kelly, and onetime campaign manager Bill Stepien less than 24 hours after the undeniable emails went public, the result of legislative subpoenas.

But he?s been aware of this bubbling scandal for months. In that time, he?s made flat-out denials, mocked reporters? questions and cracked jokes about traffic cones.

It was only after incontrovertible evidence appeared ? four months later - that he took action.

5. "Shocked," "betrayed" and "humiliated"

The quotes are everywhere ? Christie?s minions, poking fun at schoolchildren whose buses were stuck in gridlock they created. They were mocking and rude ? and delighted by the collateral damage of their political fistfight with Fort Lee?s mayor.

Christie assured us he was ?shocked,? ?betrayed? and even ?humiliated.? But what did he expect? As Christie called Bridget Kelly ?stupid? for the second or third time, didn?t it occur to him that she?s a creature of a Statehouse culture he personally curated?

Employees take cues from the boss ? that?s even more true in the personality-driven game of bare-knuckle politics that Christie plays.

Question Christie in public? You?re an ?idiot.? Cross him in Trenton, like Sen. Loretta Weinberg? ?Take a bat out? on her. Challenge his budgetmaking? Kiss your pet programs goodbye ? and pity the poor women, AIDS patients and the mentally ill who are caught in the crossfire.

Critics call Christie a bully because he holds grudges, but not his tongue. His name-calling sets a tone for the entire governor?s office. Now he claims he was ?blindsided? when his deputy chief of staff took revenge on a rival who crossed her boss. Wonder where she got that idea?
As a Republican politician, I like Chris Christie more then most of the other names being bandied about as possible GOP Presidential Candidates in 2016. With that said however, I have always found his personal style a major turn-off (loud, abrasive, confrontational, condescending, spiteful, grandstand attention whore, etc), so I am not surprised that it may finally do him in.

yes he was sort of refreshing...doesn't talk like a robot going in circles like Romney and the other Republicans...but he's over now...he's watching his political career in the rear view mirror now...he's a slow motion train wreck...I guess Hilary will be happy to battle less gifted idiots like Rubio and Paul who are too extreme to pose much of a threat

I'm from New Jersey and live in NYC, just across from Fort Lee. Fortunately (for me), this mess happened when I was in Europe at the Amsterdam Show. So I missed all the hub bub. But here's the lowdown:

Christie is a waste of human flesh. But so was John Corzine. 99.9% of politicians are wastes of human flesh and the 0.1% that are semi-decent are so smothered in slime and bullshit surrounding them that they can't do anything anyway.

Conclusion: Politicians suck.

People started hating McComplain when he kept bitching and moaning about everything under the sun. They also pretty much wrote him off as any kind of serious contender the moment he choose The fruit loop bimbo from Alaska as his running mate. McCain made a joke of him self and long ago wore out his 10 mins of fame.

A threat is something he never was, as I mentioned he wrote away any chance of even making it close when he choose Palin as his running mate.

I've never thought Biden was a good choice, but he is at least 100 and 10 times better than Palin.

I'd vote for Christie if he officially defected and defeated Hillary in the primary.

I agree. McCain was a pretty good contender for the race but he really blew it when Palin came on board. Had I been an American Republican, I would not have voted for McCain ONLY because - imagine this - Palin would have been 1 heart attack away from being President of the United States. This would have freaked the whole world out....!
