The Floyd Mayweather school of investing

Floyd Mayweather has a bet of 10.4 million on Denver to cover the spread and beat the Seattle Seahawks.

Safe bet? Is he crazy?

I wonder how much goes on the Super Bowl? I bet it doesn't move the point spread.

"Extrapolating from Nevada data, the financial planning website Mint estimates that more than $8 billion is wagered every year on the Super Bowl alone. An estimated 200 million people making wagers on the outcome of the game worldwide."

Unless I missed it, it doesnt say anything about covering spread. He may be just taking money line. Of course, either way still insane.

People work hard there whole and don't even come close to making 10m or the 100+ million he has, so, he just happens to be a freakish athlete who makes a fuck'n boat load of money from fights and endorsements. I would say in the grand scheme of things it much easy for him to make money than the average joe.

I'd have to +1 this.

Professional athletes in general make an obscene amount of money. I know NHL hall-of-famers that won championships in the 70s that still have to work because they didn't have the crazy contracts of today.

He just bet less than 1/3 of what he will make on his next fight.
When Warren Buffet bets a billion dollars, that's also fairly meaningless to his lifestyle

The guys who are betting 'big' are the ones who bet a few hundred dollars and can't make their rent payments if they lose.

You need a Humanities lesson, the difference between reasonable levels of payment and irrational levels of pay in the past have cause massive political unrest, i.e., wars, coup, etc. Right now economic disparity or income inequality are major political issues for a reason.

And you're basing most of your argument (or insults) on the person you're a discussing the topic with; professional athletes and their pay. First thing you should learn when debating; don't target the person your are debating with because you are not address the real issue and it makes you look weak.

In short, we can agree to disagree. But I feel athletes, over the last 20 years, are TOTALLY fuck'n overpaid.

You guys forget that he's able to turn major $$ out of any of his PPV fights alone - I suspect nobody was ever able to get a better PPV deal than he did, ever since Oscar De La Hoya - and that's some major negotiating skills and major showbiz value.

Both guys were smart with who they trust (which is rather rare in boxing).

Floyd is able to draw eyeballs, paying subscribers and $ alike, if any single one of us was able to turn millions if not tens of millions of $ in revenue every once in a couple months and get a cut of it, would you decline?

He's able to do so - not only an amazing athlete but a great showman as well - much respect.

The amount of work any elite athlete these days has to put in is way beyond the grasp of the general population who think "they're just born with it". There are tons of people born with natural athletic ability but to actually make money from it and get to any sort of elite level, it takes a freakish amount of work and commitment.

I really don't get this line of thinking. Elite athletes make the amounts they make because that's what the market value is for them, for their product. They generate a profit for the owners/promoters so why shouldn't they get their fair share.

Sorry bro, the real issue is that you are jealous and have an "entitlement complex".

You have nothing to say about singers, comedians and actors making the same amount of money; because you think these people have talent and brains and athlete's don't.
Then you turn on the TV and watch a coked out actor who fucks porn stars make
$1.8 million PER EPISODE and you clap your hands and say he's winning.

So this is not a debate, it's just you hating athletes and me telling you the truth about it.

I don't expect you or anyone else who thinks like you to ever see it any other way;
but that's why your'e always last in line behind the athlete.
You don't know and wouldn't appreciate what the athlete did to get to the front of the line.

And finally you think you are smarter than the people who own the pro team, who cut the checks.
You don't give them credit for having enough brains to pay what they can afford to get what they want.
You want shit for free, you are the internet.

Exactly, nobody had a $1.71 BILLION football stadium either.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MetLife_Stadium

It's like people see these structures and see the ticket price and see the TV/cable contract price
and they still don't get it.
