I need life advice please: Should I leave California to move to Dallas? or Stay in CA and rebuild?

I created a mainstream website as a startup, moved to Bay Area just south of San Francisco to promote it and it failed. I pitched it to many many investors and tech people and no one wanted to invest in it or work with me. so its dead.

In the adult world my income is declining, but its still keeping me afloat.
So the thing is since I'm an affiliate in adult im self employed, and California taxes just rape you, plus the paperwork. Everything is more expensive in California.
Its also really expensive to live here, the rents keep rising and rising. But its also beautiful and liberal in California and I like that.
Plus im already here.

In Dallas Texas I found an apartment in a 4 year old luxury building for dirt cheap, concierge, pool, gym, etc. Im getting the top floor unit so no one over me can make noise.
And no income tax is *huge* for me.

BUT, I'd be leaving the best place in the world to be a techie. My friends here are senior engineers at Intel, Apple, Cisco etc etc.
My friends in Texas would be working at Pizza Hut and cashier at Kroger.

But the CA taxes suck. if you make $50k a year in California you have to pay $200/month to the state of California just for living in California. If you work really hard and make $100,000 a year, you have to pay $600 a MONTH to California, just for living in California.

anyways, just wanted to know if leaving SF to move to Dallas is a smart move or a dumb move

Well, you just found so many ways to not get funding. It become a failure only when you decide it. If you believe in your idea you shouldn't have abandoned...

As for moving, I'm not from the US, but when I got the chance to move and my feeling was with me, I didn't hesitated, took 4 days and I was out, and now I'm a partner in an IT company.

What difference does it make on where you live?

I've never been to Dallas but love California. Why not stay there?

Everyone says "It's more expensive to live in California". I must be blind; I've been living in California for twenty years so I don't see the difference. I can live anywhere; I choose to live here.

As soon as I my kid is done with school, we are moving to Hawaii.

If you want to give up on your dreams and just get by comfortably then move. Being uncomfortable keeps you hungry and you will strive to earn more money. Being around your peers and people in the tech/startup world will also inspire you and help drive you to success. So it depends what you want in life. However, I have been living in San Fran since 1999 and to me it is the best place on earth and I never want to leave. Ive lived in Texas and other than Austin I am not a fan of Texas. FYI - it gets effen ungodly hot there in the summer

Wait just a second........YOU say you want to live in California because your friends there are all liberal yet the reason you want to move away is because liberals/Marxists have created an anti-business environment/taxes are too high?

Oh you left out the automatic $800 tax on any corp even if it not even active. And the state being broke, hospitals shutting down due to all the illegals flooding the emergency rooms for infected pinky toes and other minor issues, the state injecting kids with garbage without their parents consent, dangerous criminals being released from prison early due to over crowding, etc etc etc

My advice to you is to stay where you are and just reduce your expenses. Try a house share with other people who are in the same boat. The great thing about California is the social aspect where people tend to be open and it is easy to make friends.

Have your tried crowd funding for your business idea?

Also perhaps your business idea is good but you are not pitching it very well. Perhaps find someone else to pitch it.

Dude, they iron their jeans in Dallas. And they have serious hot weather during the summer, so if you like being outdoors, take that into consideration. And ice storms. And the occasional tornado. And lots of bad, all-you-can-eat buffets with bad fried food that passes for fine dining. And very Christian, conservative.

My advice: if you are internet-based and looking to cut expenses, get you some Rosetta Stone Beginner's Spanish and move to Colombia. Average monthly salary $350. The US is highly over-rated.

Also, as you stated in your post, no income tax is huge. Well, last I looked, if you were in Texas, you still have to pay those pesky Federal taxes. If you live outside of the US for the entire year (like 330 of 365), your first $120,000 in income is tax free. My numbers may be off a little, it changes every year, but you get the idea.

This, if you are moving to Texas and you don't have a reason as in friends or family to go to Dallas, then by all means go to Austin. It's fucking 100 times better in every way you can imagine, Added bonus for you is there is a tech industry in Austin and it has a great night life. It's also one of the most liberal cities in the mid west.

Decision made, im moving to Dallas, gave my notice on my apt and bought the plane ticket today and I'm so fucking excited! The new apartment Im getting is killer, top floor of a newly built luxury building with concierge, pool, gym, etc etc for less than a dump in the bay area. And no fucking roommates. And no fucking state income tax. I should have done this months ago.

Congratulations, it's always nice to make a new start.

Make sure to purchase a Tony Romo jersey so you'll look like a native.
