Yes...best thing you can do if you want to get any real work done. Win 8 is good for touch screen devices but they wanted to make it a one size fits all (a first for microsoft who usually prefers endless editions of it's OS).
If you are going to get a new laptop and you are going to be stuck with win 8 I would recommend one with a touch screen so you can at least take advantage of that aspect of the new version of windows.
Good luck!Comment

I've been pulling my hair out with Win 8 over the last week or so. I just went back to Win 7. One thing I've found in Win 8 (other than the shitty interface, even after it's been modded) is that driver support is not up to par. Plus, it's just fucking ugly and non-intuitive...like facebook. Fuck facebook and fuck Win 8!!!Comment

Quick tip for Win 7 users. msconfig (search from start menu) -> Boot -> Advanced Options. Select "Number of processors" check box and max it out. This should increase your boot time.
Also, for either OS, search Control Panel for "Sensor". You actually have to "enable" this in order to disable this. The sensor setting tracks your location. (just a tip for people that don't like that sort of thing)Comment

Thank you for saying it: "it's just fucking ugly and non-intuitive...like facebook. Fuck facebook and fuck Win 8!"I've been pulling my hair out with Win 8 over the last week or so. I could not agree more. These are NOT designed to be user friendly...there is NO excuse for that shit! I refuse to use either of these monstrosities on principle along. Who the fuck do they think they are and why are so many sheep willing to bend over and let them fuck them?
Makes the Apple bunch look positively brilliant!

Install Classic Shell, you'll never have to see Metro again, Start button back and you'll have a PC that boots and performs much quicker than with Windows 7.Comment
-
That's not true. A clean install of Win 7 vs a clean install of Win 8 and Win 7 boots just as fast and actually feels snappier than Win 8. At least on my comp, I just tested both this week.
While Classic Shell does give Win 8 a Win 7 look it still "feels" different. No Aero and still looks flat. Win 8 really is like that AOL gif comparison that's been posted.Comment

i agree, it's pos. it's amazing to me how dissconnected ms is from its customer base. this product is more about following apple than delivering a solid os. the 8.1 upgrade is fucking joke, it's all about being able to customize it with different colors, i mean who gives a shit about tht? apple does.
the absolute worst part is how sliding a finger across the touch pad to move the mouse instead opens up the fucking charms, overriding what i'm doing.Comment

No shit!! I fucking hated that. That alone was reason enough to go back to Win 7.
You know what really sucks? Having a new laptop for a couple of weeks, fighting with Win 8, spending 10 hours reinstalling Win 7 and apps then to have the fucking mouse buttons below the touchpad stop working intermittently. I may have to send this thing back. What a fucking nightmare this turning out to be.

I actually like Windows 8.1. Windows 7 was great as well, but I haven't found issues with 8.1 yet. Good driver support, great task manager, excellent boot time, the start screen is actually nice once you get used to it. The Windows Store apps are nice and an interesting new market for me (as a developer).
Besides, I doubt Microsoft is going to drop the new interface. It's a bit like DOS vs. Windows back in the old days. People didn't like leaving their command line interface either. But in time, everyone moves on and it's for the better imo.Comment

The reason I got the Dell Venue 11 was for a nice tablet with laptop functionality. Some programs I run require Windows. I will be using it as a tablet for 90% of the time. I already have an ipad 2 and that thing works great. I will just return this damn thing and get a regular laptop.Comment

When the Windows 7 launch parties were announced most people thought Microsoft had hit rock bottom in regards to their disconnect from the human species but we were wrong. Perhaps Windows 8 is where they hit rock bottom.
I attended a Christmas party at the home of one of the MS execs last year and they guy had Christmas lights formed into a huge MS logo on his lawn. Seriously it was the most gaudy thing I had ever seen on anyone's lawn let alone on a multimillion dollar estate.
I have attended social events where I have been around lots of other MS execs and they are not impressive people to say the least. I never actually spoke to Steve Balmer but have been within earshot of him at a few events and if you did not know he was a MS exec you would think he was a sales manager for Xerox machines or something.Comment
