Since the Earth's age is 4.54 billion years, how could we are in 2013?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gregorian_calendar

I follow this "invented by man" calendar because most people do and I need them, but not in my heart. I won't say my soul because I don't have one

For me it's just a matter of life schedule, productivity and business, without a calendar we couldn't make progress.

So, what do you think about this? Do you really believe we are in 2013 and tomorrow will be the end of the year and the beginning of a new one?

Of course I believe that according that invented calendar we are in 2013. Thats a fact.
And I do not believe that its 2013th speaking about earth's age.

This question does not make much sense.
According to invented calendar we are in 2013, according to earth's years we are not.

Although invented calendar was needed because we do not know exactly how old is earth. I don't see your point here...

I've got five minutes... the human idea of time is fucked up and based on old knowledge that's overdue to be erased and re-written.

We base our idea of 'time' according to the orbit of our planet around our star. Totally acceptable if you know nothing about anything but that... A few flaws in out year that a child could point out are that months contain varying numbers of days, and that there are twelve of them. Fucking stupid.

In planetary terms, we need a 10 "month" calendar. It's the only appropriate format. I say "month" because we need to do away with that idea. Months are caveman shit.

Beyond that, we need another calendar to accurately portray our stars position in the galaxy. As the galaxy rotates, our star moves up and down, taking the Earth along for the ride. An intelligent civilization would be doing right by minding this, since it's a little important. According to out current understanding of time, we know that about every 65 million years or so, something happens on Earth that really fucks shit up. The vast majority of extinction events are evenly spaced around 65 million years from one another. We also know that according to our suns position relative to the galactic plain, we always seem to be in the same area when these events take place.

I think that humanity would be better served if we threw out the current calendar and built a new one, based solely upon our stars position in the galaxy, and based entirely off the idea that no number larger than 10 be used to express any full cycle.

After that we can redo the calendar that we know in the image of the calendar we build for understanding galactic time.

So I have to agree. The calendar is fucked.

I bet you think clocks should only go 1 - 10, instead of going 1 - 12 twice a day.

(I've thought this since I was a kid)

Actually, I do.

1 is the most perfect number, and 10 is the most perfect explanation of any cycle no matter how long or short the cycle is.

Humans have it all wrong. From seconds to hours and even the attributes we lend to constants such as light speed. Nothing is MPH/KPH, because both are human ideas, not natural fact. Natural fact is 10. All constants are 10, all cycles are 10. Anything that can't be worked to 10 is wrong.

While your proposal makes some sense, I would offer that there are a million things on this broken planet that require fixing, altering the calendar would certainly not be at the top of my list.

Agreed, mostly.

At the same time....

Humans view each day as 24 hours. Each year, 365 days.

And we all know and except this as fact, which it is.... or would be... if not for the reality that it's not 24 hours, and not 365 days.

Humans are stuck on the idea that time is personal to them. Even that it is the very idea by which they purpose their lives.

The Gregorian calendar is wrong, and it's fundamentally wrong. It's based on uneducated human ideals. Best I can say for it.

Time is time. The human concept of time is wrong.

And to where I disagree... perhaps the planet would be less broken if we taught from a stance of fact (10 in a full cycle) as opposed to falsehood, where 12 makes a year...

I'm reminded of a professor in school. He told us one day that even if you can pass a test that is based upon absolute fiction, you've not done anything other than reinforce the fiction itself, and you've ignored the fact.

Really, I do love the time concept. It's one of the only times in life that I feel my brain is firing on all cylinders.

Nice thoughts here!

I agree that there are so many things to fix that are more important than a new calendar, and I have to admit that most people wont understand the change because they don't have this "point of view" of things. I bet most people don't even know that we follow the Gregorian calendar.

We know very little about time and space. Perhaps we should have a species calendar. According to this calendar the current year is something between 300,000 - 400,000 when homo erectus evolved into homo sapiens.

By the way, the Roman calendar (753 BC) had ten months.
