The boat was upside down and full of turbid water, check the diver's video, the guy is moving around with great difficulty finding his way around even with the controller on radio telling him where to go. Without diving equipment he'd never get out of the ship in the first place, never mind the bends (And yes, they did have to decompress him in the diving bell)

He didn't swim really - he was in a boat the entire time. It's not like he was treading water for three days. Fucking amazing video however.

When I went into the Marines I was stunned to learn that most blacks couldn't swim. First time we hit the pool for water survival training the black kids just sank right to the bottom. The drill instructors had huge poles with huge hooks on them to pull them out. The inner city kids didn't have access to pools growing up.

“According to the USA Swimming Foundation, about 70 percent of African-American children can't swim. Lack of access and financial constraints account only partly for these numbers. Fear, cultural factors and even cosmetic issues play a role as well.”

Yes black people are terrible swimmers (sweeping generalisation). Part of it comes down to muscle composition and bone density. However I'm black and I finished 12 out of 320 in the swim section of the 2012 Barcelona triathlon. COME ON!!!

And Rob, you wouldn't get the bends, you only experience those when using a scuba tank with compressed air.

It depends. If you had come up right away when the boat hit the bottom, and you were making sure to let air dribble out of your lungs as you rose, (so that your lungs didn't over expand), you would be ok. Once you were down there for any length of time though, over say, 15 minutes, you would have the bends, since the air in that cabin was under pressure from the water around it, and you would have nitrogen in your bloodstream.

Under a minute if he was holding on to some kind of flotation device. He is probably VERY lucky that he DIDN"T try to go up. If he was not a trained diver, (wich it doesn't seem like he was), then he would have held his breath the whole way up, as opposed to letting air out gradually as he went up. His lungs would have ruptured as the air in his lungs expanded. He would have been dead 4 or 5 minutes after he hit the surface.
