If you want to go through the initiations you can become a mormon. They copied some of their rituals. from the masons. Some people think that is why Joseph Smith was killed. To answer your question: Yes I believe they are still powerful. The small town where I live has a statue near city hall where a woman is reading a book. She is pointing to a page where there is the "all seeing eye" inscribed. Also the town logo is a pyramid and the entrance to the courthouse is pyramid shaped. These guys basically run the town.

Often masons want police and firefighters to join. They want people involved in the community. I doubt police and firefighters ever rise up too far in the masons but they are desired to be members for obvious reasons. There is also a good reason why some masons put logos on their cars.
