You have to seek out the movies that aren't "post 3d conversions". Unfortunately, most 3D movies weren't shot in true 3D, so the blu ray version won't translate into a good experience. The reason so many of the cartoons look better is the 3D process is not an afterthought. It's set up for 3D and rendered that way also -- so the separation and depth is incredible.
From what I can remember when it was released, Michael Bay decided to shoot Transformers:Dark of the Moon in stereo.
Also, I saw Dredd 3D in the theater -- and while having some of the most crisp and beautiful slow motion cinematography I've EVER seen, the 3D was also great -- and it's a BAD ASS movie to boot. BAD ASS I'm telling you. I don't know if the Blu Ray translates the 3d that well, but watch it anyway.
Sometimes post conversion doesn't look too bad. But I'd read reviews on Blu Ray Digest before taking the plunge.Last edited by bronco67; 12-07-2013, 02:38 PM.

Gravity was great in 3D (on an IMAX screen, even better)...

Took my kids to see frozen. Jaw dropping Disney animation and a case study for future 3d. Great story too, went back twice. I wish I could be alive for cinema in another millennia!AsiaMoviePass My Best Rebilling SiteComment

If you are okay going back a few years, I enjoyed Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" in 3D:
So what did you get?

If you have a 3D setup, you probably want to watch all movies you are interested into in 3D if they were actually filmed in 3D.
What I like to do is to go to realorfake3d dot com. If a movie I want to watch shows under "Fake 3D", I watch it in 2D. If it shows under "Real 3D" I watch it in 3D.
If you are looking for ideas of 3D movies to watch, just go down the "real 3d" column. If the title doesn't link to amazon its because it hasn't been released yet.Comment

Avatar was shot using real 3D cameras. Result: nice 3D.
The first Thor movie was a post-process 3D. Ok movie, but the 3D was non existent.
Transformers: Dark of the Moon, was a crazy mix of real 3D cameras, post-3D, and iMax. Result: Good movie, but so-so 3D.
Gravity was also post-3D, but the effect was great. Space felt deep, and the things that fly at you seemed very real. It was the best use of fake 3D I had seen so far.
Star Trek into Darkness was another post-3D thing. Movie was ok, 3D was non existent.Comment

I think doing it post in Gravity was a good idea, because most of the elements in each shot were composited from a combo of live action and cg. They had total control for separation because every shot was a stew of different ingredients. In most live action shoots, it much more difficult to separate things later.Avatar was shot using real 3D cameras. Result: nice 3D.
