Is there any advantage to filing a tax return if you only have a few grand in verifiable?

Even if you don't make much money you should still file. Otherwise the tax department can arbitrarily assess you any amount it chooses as your income and then fine you and possibly imprison you.

According to this article in Forbes. If you are single, under 65 and can't be claimed as a dependent by someone else you have to file if you made more than $9,750 during the year.

If all of your money comes from self employment you will likely owe money.

If you have been paying federal tax quarterly you might get some or even most of it back, but you will still likely have to pay about 15% to social security tax.
