Skills That Are High In Demand?

What is a skill that is always needed around here? A skill that's not going to take years to learn. For instance, no programming or web design. That takes years to get really good at. What could someone study on their own for 6 months and then come back here with a website offering their services?

I think in 6 months you could teach yourself (or take some basic classes) some basic program and script installation/modifying skills. You could also likely learn a good deal about Wordpress and making/modifying themes. You won't be an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but it would be something that is in demand.

You could also learn a lot about SEO in that time and try out a few things in that arena.

You know, I've dabbled with that. I even began reading a book on it once. It's not too overly competitive?

You know, I was thinking towards that area. Thanks kane. So you would recommend learning everything I can about Wordpress. What about Droopla? I think lynda.com has tutorials on both of these. CMS is what they call it, right? If you could be more specific on that first part you mentioned about the "basic program/script installation" I would appreciate it. I'm willing to put in the time to learn if I know it's going to be valuable.

I have never really worked with Droopal, but others do use it so I can't tell you much about that. Wordpress itself won't take you long to learn how to install and use, but the themes and all of the stuff you can do with it can get pretty involved. I have mostly taught myself how to do things. I can't build a theme from scratch, but I can modify existing themes for my needs. I would suggest just checking out a few basic online tutorials as far as Wordpress goes. You can be up and running in a day and experimenting with different things quickly.

As for scripts/programming. You might look into what the popular scripts that are used in the industry are. I know there are different tube scripts and CMS scripts that are used by a lot of people. Learning how to install those and use those could come in handy. Even if you only ever use it for your own projects.

Lynda.com has some great tutorials. I have watched a few of them. Also, make sure to check out Youtube. You will be shocked at how many tutorials people put up on there.

Alright, thanks Kane. Would you call this a "Wordpress Developer" then? Or is this one step below that? I'll have to talk to you again. I haven't had ICQ on in a couple of years or so. I've lost my password.

I've considered that too believe it or not. I think that actually is a good area to get into, but I think it may depend on which part of the country you're in. It does cost money though to get certified as a massage therapist. I've been meaning to look into this further.

I use Drupal exclusively for my websites, the learning curve is a lot higher but its a much more powerful CMS. However there aren't many modules out there specifically geared for adult content, and seems to be tons of them for Wordpress.

                                  I'm like that with programming.

I've watched loads of videos but I just don't have the right mentality for it. I stick with it to try and change how I think, but it's not happening.

If you have the money, go to one of those new developer schools that popped up. They have these web developer boot camps now. You go there for about 9 weeks and they prepare you for a job. Dev Boot Camp is the most well known one, but there are others. The claim you can be a complete beginner, but my own investigation shows that you fair better if you have done your beginner homework already. I would do it if I had the money.

Truth is if you can't make enough to support yourself right now in adult doing sales related things the chances are most of the people who would hire you can't either. Many people in those adult axillary services have either been hit or left porn for mainstream already for that reason. There is still demand but it's way off the highs.

You could just focus on the grunt work Things people don't have the time for and medium skilled tasks like doing server moves.

I so agree with you on the sales. That's why I'd rather learn a skill instead that can crossover to both adult and mainstream. So far I'm looking at kane's suggestion of wordpress and scripts. I just don't know where to start with that. These suggestions are really good but also a bit vague if you don't truly understand them. For instance, I like this idea of your's "server moves" but I'm not entirely sure what that is.

I've been asked two or three times in the last month if I knew a good video promo editor who can make scene opening graphics, bumper ads and that sort of thing. I still don't have someone to recommend. If someone knows a good one, send them to me.... If you want a soft spot in the market, learn adobe premiere pro (or whatever the top software for it is these days).

I wouldn't let whether or not it's competitive be a decision maker personally. If you don't have a specific skill you're great at right now, it could be one that you become great at.
