A hacker targeted the niche dating service Cupid Media, which is run out of Southport on the Gold Coast, earlier this year, stealing client names, email addresses, unencrypted passwords and birthdays. The data was found on a server on which hackers had amassed tens of millions of records stolen from Adobe, PR Newswire and the US National White Collar Crime Centre (NW3C), among others.

Cupid Media says it operates over 30 niche dating websites based on ethnicity, lifestyle preferences, religion and location. It also operate a few other miscellaneous dating related services.

It is always strange to me how companies can pull in millions a year and not think....hmm... should we safe guard our millions and our customers by hiring an in house security guy for $140,000 a year and then contract out to a company for another $150,000 a year to keep our data on our server instead of pastebin?
