Online Armor firewall (free version), or any rule-based whitelist firewall that will prevent things from calling home without asking. I've used Comodo and another I can't remember on older computers, could swear it started with a Z.

NoScript for Firefox + other adblocker extensions. Block stuff by default.

Uninstall Java if you don't need it.

Android is a malware creator's WET DREAM ... mostly due to OS fragmentation.

I liked AVG until about 3 years ago when their results started going to hell, and it seemed like they stipped updating their definitions as often. The reason I love Avast (FREE flavor), is because it finds problems other premium AV softwares miss, as well as having a built-in ROOT KIT scanner/remover that works even better than Kaspersky's stand-alone TDSS Killer software.

Both Norton (Symantec) and McAfee are total shit ... The are major bloatware ... that is to say, that the amount of system resources they consume, for the job that they do (or should we say "do not" ...), doesn't justify using them. They will degrade the performance on most average appointed hardware, while leaving many threats/issues undetected.

I use AVAST now...they seem to be on top of things and their free antivirus program is fucking GREAT! I used to use Microsoft Security Essentials but they started slipping once Windows 8 came out and Microsoft started focusing on Defender.

In my opinion, AVAST is the BEST free antivirus you can get currently
