Partnership on a helicopter purchase?

Anyone in FL want to go 50/50 on a helicopter? Figure $150k or so per person on a decent used one ($300-$350k range), and $35-50k/year maintenance. Looking at something like this:

Always wanted to learn to fly choppers since a kid. Have you flew one before or looking to start?

Ebay probably not the best place to buy a helicopter. If you know Rex at VG he would be a good person to talk to about such a purchase.

I don't want to fly it; I want to be flown. I'm just looking to share the ownership with someone local. I don't need it often, maybe about 1/4 to 1/2 the time.

When I worked at Nashua Corp. a few of the guys got together to buy a plane.

The disputes about time (everyone seemed to want it the same days) led to a second aircraft purchase.

Wouldnt it be cheaper and better for taxes to charter when you need it? Not that I know anything about this but I heard buying the Private Jet Card Memberships the way to go to fly private. Unless of course you're initials are RC.

You can look at it from different perspective: You invest into helicopter rent business and on top of that you get to use it for yourself as well

After all when there are 2 of you (owners) you sort of let it use to someone else anyway (just 1 person instead of more when renting).

Not suggesting, just saying that it may be more difficult to find someone who thinks its viable to buy helicopter and not get any ROI out of it while it sits there.

Where did you get $35K-$50/year for maintenance? I use to work on Sikorsky's and can tell you that number is way off. Lots of moving parts to break. They are fun to fly but very expensive to operate and maintain.

I figured 70k-100k (35k-50k per person) was fair for maintaining them. If that's not the case, then it's more expensive that I want to deal with, when you factor in fuel. C'mon, man, we'd make great partners! You should come up to my neck of the woods and check out some of the houses here. Great opportunity to buy properties and run them as rentals. It's a weird real estate confluence of high rental prices and low purchase prices. When the purchase prices go up, the rents will swell with them, making it ideal right now.

Why not break up the purchase into many small pieces? Sell it as a time share / investment, make the 'copter available for rental, lease, tours, tv news, police, search & rescue, etc? Or I don't know if this is possible, but lease the copter instead and time-share the cost of that out. Take on the lease amount of risk as possible.

after getting my fixed wing ticket (like 25 years ago) I took 10 hours lessons in an R22 - the most fun and challenging machine I have ever operated - freaky as fuck in the beginning when you are used to flying planes - but what a blast.

From my experience, sharing stuff like that with friends is bad news. You might want to look into quarter share or fractional to start out and see how that goes. I worked on aircraft for 22 years and one thing I can tell you is how much the accounting departments bitched at the owners about how much money they cost to operate/maintain.

My advice would be to really take your time looking into the actual operating costs. You could lose your ass really quick on equipment like that.

Why not get a Robinson R44 instead? Much cheaper, and much simpler, with MUCH lower maintenance costs. The one you are looking at has way too much stuff that breaks on it. The more gizmos on an aircraft, (or a boat), the more that there are things to go wrong and require repair and/or maintenance.

p.s. you are coming up on 5000 hours on the one you are looking at, that means a complete overhaul, which will cost you AT LEAST $750k.

I would highly recommend that you do a bunch more homework on this subject prior to buying.
