Japan Earthquake?

I'm scratching my head over this one.
I know little about earthquakes and probably even less about tsunamis.

After the recent Japan earthquake there were fears of a tsunami, this I get. What I don't get is why the tsunami threat is for Hawaii..

Thanks for satisfying my stupidity.

But how do they know the direction and isn't there a whole ocean to cross? How can they be so specific to point it to a little island.

They have big computers to work out the probable scenarios.

energy released in water radiates out in all directions, and energy loss in water is minimal.

hawaii, sitting in the center of the pacific, will feel the effects of any water event to some degree

A lot has to do with the way the wave energy is funneled along the coasts.

The Bay of Fundy here in Canada gets some of the highest tides in the world, primarily because of its funnel shape. Some of those areas in India have similiar funnel shapes that focused the wave action in to an increasingly smaller area.

http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/

they have buoys set up, that set off alarms when they change height, so they know which way the tsunami is headed

or, if a tsunami is coming

not to mention if the wave is pointed directly into the funnel and doesn't have to bounce off the sides, blammo. wow.

They don't have to know that; it's automatic that Hawaii goes on alert if there is a earth quake in the pacific.

A tsunami will travel at 500 mile per hour so that's a reason to give an early warning no matter what.

Japan is in the Pacific, and Hawaii is in the middle of the Pacific. Simple as that.

Hawaii sounds like a scary place to live, out in the middle of Ocean, just waiting to get swallowed up.
