Business Thread... For those of you that don't have a mobile site why don't you?

I was just checking out a few big paysites and noticed they don't have mobile sites.

So my question is for those of you with no mobile site why don't you?

Mobile dating is getting bigger and bigger at Dating Factory every month. It's amazing.

People are surfing less and less on a PC these days.

Yep...mobile is finally really taking off.

I get out a bit here in Vegas and meet people from all over the world here on vacation.

It's been surprising to me how many people don't have or want a computer anymore. They do all their surfing on their mobile devices now.

Kinda makes me wonder why I'm shooting HD video for a 3 inch screen! LOL!

For us it took off like wildfire 4 years ago. Do you feel before this year it wasn't taking off for you?

Not only did I not see a whole lot of mobile sales for my site back then...but as an affiliate I couldn't make a mobile sale to save my soul 4 years ago.

And when I say "taking off"...I only mean it's getting much, much bigger now.
I haven't seen it explode overnight into something big.

Just watching it grow slowly and getting bigger and bigger.

The real change has been that smartphones now have (as opposed to 4 years ago) dual processors and can really function just as well as the computers we had 5 or 6 years ago for email, surfing, and even working on stuff with apps.

So now most "civilian" people who don't do high intensity work on a PC are just not bothering with a computer anymore.
They can do their Facebook right on their phone. lol

That is the big difference I'm seeing.
And now they are slowly getting used to purchasing on their phones as well.

The only thing I still haven't figured out is...how the hell do they jerk off to a 3 inch screen? And where do they do it at?

Are they going home, getting out the lube and tissue, locking the bedroom door, and then holding their smart phone in one hand and their cock in the other? lol
And maybe wearing some reading glasses to magnify the tiny screen so they can actually SEE everything that's happening?

As someone that uses my phone and tablet to browse the net a lot, I can say from the users side I hate most so called "mobile" sites. I almost always prefer to use the full website option if there is one. The reason being is most mobile sites lack the full feature set of the full site..

I will admit, I don't usually browse porn sites, so I can't say how a members area would work out, but then again video on mobile is costly on the tiny little B/W allotments that pretty much all mobile users are limited to, unless they are on wifi.

I hear you. I think the market is only getting bigger.

The problem as an affiliate making mobile sales is how many sites actually have a good mobile signup process. That skews the results imo.

Also, it's so easy to stream from phone to tv or monitor not to mention a phone is so private and can be used to watch porn in places you couldn't before ie in the bathroom.

4 years ago, mobile was my 5-7% of total traffic. Today it's 30% and growing fast. Tablet @ 12% and growing fast.

BTW, hitting you Shap, it's been a while.

True but surfing habits are so different now. Take myself as an example. I used to be 100% all computer based. Now I would say the majority of what I consume in terms of the internet is on my phone or table. My social sites are entire on mobile devices. My articles, news, sports, tech updates all on my mobile tablets. I only really use my computer for email (I know that sounds ironic based on my other uses of mobile and what most people use mobile for lol)

I agree 100% and that's because the guys creating the mobile sites get caught up in creating something for mobile and completely forget two things 1. what the website experience was like and how can i make that enjoyable on a mobile device and 2. that it's porn!

I get a lot of viewers watching my cam using mobiles or tablets. I think most of them lock themselves in the bathroom although one guy was driving his car.

I love surfing on my mobile and playing online games and stuff. And shopping. I pretty much only go on my computer to broadcast my cam and edit content now.

We have produced mobile for 4 years now.
Mobile traffic is monetizing and its trends are always improving for us.
We are currently producing in Flash and very fast HLS serving all mobile devices.
The mobile site is an auto-redirect from the normal PC site.
This works well for affiliate linking and customers with multiple devices.

It should have all the same features sure, but I think it would be foolish to have your site load a full version of the site on a cell phone. They are optimized to pc's and macs not the average cell phone. The idea is to hit the masses not the few with the best equipment.

It's clear those two lines will be blurred so much there wont be a difference soon, but not yet.

It was great seeing you in Munich Shap! I agree with you. Besides my actual work at NETbilling on my desktop at the office and home, mostly everything I do now is on my iPhone and iPad.

Bathroom There's always a need for privacy, be it a sex-starved husband, someone living with roommates, or a quick workplace jerk.

One tough thing with porn guys is getting caught up in having been in the biz for so long it's easy to forget what it's like for the surfer.

I'd be useless if I jerked off in the afternoon. lol

I'm "one and done". As soon as I cum, it's off to sleep for me.

So I'm one of those folks who couldn't run to the bathroom and jerk off with my phone during the daytime.

While mobile is getting bigger, PC is getting smaller. So have you seen an increase in joins or a shift in joins based on device?

The younger crowd chooses a phone with internet rather than a phone + PC at home with internet just due to cost. It's much like the poor countries, it's the same theory. There is also more privacy, so might be a smaller screen but they aren't in the family room on a PC. A few years back we had one of our largest sale days starting the night of Thanksgiving into the next day and it was all mobile. It's easy to sneak away to take a nap and bring your porn on a phone with you. As for a tablet ... that thing was made for jerking off.

Instead of maintaining both a mobile and desktop version, we've since converted to a responsive design (on several of our sites) and immediately -- I mean immediately -- saw what used to be lackluster mobile conversions become consistent conversions.

While responsive is not perfect, it indeed provides mobile users an experience close to desktop with the added benefit of familiar presentation and design elements that the end user is accustomed to when visiting our pages.

Also important to note, where we had a an approximate 90 second time-on-site metric with a dedicated mobile option, our responsive design has given rise to a more than 6 minute time-on-site metric for our mobile users, clearly indicating it is being well received. Our desktop traffic has always been consistently good. But the mobile end always lagged behind even with a dedicated mobile option.

In the end, I think we made the right choice in completely getting rid of our mobile option and focusing entirely on responsive.

BTW, nice to see you around Shap

For the dummies... can you explain exactly what responsive is? Maybe a quick link?

Beaner, at its most basic description, it's a design technique that auto scales to the current viewport of the end user. Images, css containers, etc. scale while legibility remains.

Thus, you basically see the same site on a Desktop PC / Mac as you would on a tablet as you would on a smart phone, etc. Obviously it reaches a point where you need to specify a minimum viewing width, but at the point, each section begins to "stack" on top of one another (for example... if you have two lead features side by side... they will scale down to fit inside a user's viewport until a specific point, then it will auto render with one feature above the other.

Here's a Wikipedia Link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Responsive_web_design

Here's a good example:
http://mashable.com/2012/12/11/responsive-web-design/

With your cursor on the right edge of the window... drag it towards the left to make your screen width smaller. You can see the design "respond" to the current viewing width without forcing you to scroll sideways.

I use xhamster specifically because they allow you to switch to desktop view. And yep, only watch porn when I have a wifi connection, which I'm sure is the case for most, at least in the UK anyway, which = at home. Which leads to the next question of if you have wifi, you almost certainly have a pc/laptop, so why use a mobile phone. Don't really know the answer to that one.

This whole mobile stuff.... A whole upcomming generation of people on tablets, phones, etc... all accustomed to watching STREAMING videos since youtube, etc...

Will it kill the demand for downloadable files at some point?

And is this incidentally going to kill the torrents? file-sharers?

How do you auto-detect the device someone is viewing your site on so that you can auto-redirect them to the mobile version?

One way is by seeing the OS they are using.

But that sucks too. Somebody on a big Android tablet is using the same OS as a guy on an Android smart phone.

Same for Iphones and a user on a big IPad.

And the css3/html5 coding isn't quite there yet in my opinion. It's getting there. But "getting there" isn't good enough.

So for now...I just make my mobile site in the K.I.S.S. mode (keep it simple stupid). No attempts at streaming on it. Just basic and easy to use with .mp4 vids.

I am hoping that within the next year that perhaps things will shake out a bit more and I can rev up the mobile site's aesthetics and put a little more sizzle in with the steak. But until then...it works across everything.

The phones these days are just about able to surf regular sites just as well as the mobile optimized ones. I think it is mostly apple products that need the special setups?

I could be wrong, but that is my take on it.
We setup our content for use on all mobile devices for people. And in our mainstream stuff, we noticed that we have to make a sepcial setup again for apple, but other phones and devices are fine.
In the end we will make an app just to include it in the stores.

IMO, responsive we design is not the wave of the future, it is a stepping stone, there are a plethora of reasons why it is not so good.

usually by checking the headers server side for the browser type and using redirect headers. otherwise you can check it with javascript client side and redirecting then.

I do it in htaccess https://gist.github.com/chrillo/1403965

Remember to have a separate htaccess on your mobile landing page/folder

OK I understood about 3% of all that above. LOL That's why I like Robbie's K.I.S.S. approach. I have a mobile design for www.erosexotica.com but the "PC" version displays well on most devices, including tablets, so I don't even bother with re-directing to the mobile design. Wrong move?

Here's a Wikipedia Link:

Here's a good example:
http://mashable.com/2012/12/11/responsive-web-design/

With your cursor on the right edge of the window... drag it towards the left to make your screen width smaller. You can see the design "respond" to the current viewing width without forcing you to scroll sideways.
Ty for explanation

I used to redirect to the mobile site.

But since the advent of tablets becoming so popular...the Android users were pissed off.

Their tablets are HUGE and flash works just fine on them. They wanted the full "normal" site and not the stripped down mobile site.

So I got rid of the redirect.

And I just went "old school" and put a link to the mobile site on the tour.
That solved that problem and stopped the complaints.

http://claudia-marie.com/tour/ Look at the nav bar at the top. There is a link for the mobile site.

Simple, but effective and works across all platforms. lol

I like "old school" sometimes because most people (people who BUY) are old school to some extent. Nice solution!

I like simple and effective because I'm simple. Still working on the effective part tho....:D

I haven't seen it explode overnight into something big.

Just watching it grow slowly and getting bigger and bigger.
Does CM bring in more of an older mature customer base? I would factor in that older surfers are slower adapters to the tablets and smart phones. I know for Karups OW, we do the most technical support for the older members who are not that proficient with computers. We are just starting in the last year to see a rise of these members starting to use the iPad, and emailing asking us how to make it work etc.

We solved this problem with a flexible design for our mobile cam site -- the layout adjusts to the viewport size so it is proportionate to the device's display resolution.

http://mobile.xlovecam.com/ it is proportionate in a browser too, resizing the layout with the window size, but the design elements are minimal and geared toward mobile device rendition.

I was more inclined to get a mobile version up but honestly browser architecture for mobile has sort of killed it for me. You can download Dolphin browser for iPhone or Android and mimic iphone, android, desktop or even customize it.

I think the more popular Dolphin and alike will be,(btw it's pretty damn popular) strict mobile and responsive design will be less important.

Except maybe for the wap payment on mobile. Cool feature but it isn't available everywhere and may become less so due to the ability for kids to just click a button.

Who knows. I do have mobile payment options and that has definitely picked up.

And its extremely difficult to learn to program mobile. I dont want to have to learn Objective C or Java.
I took a class on PhoneGap and it was hard as fuck. and Titanium is even worse.

I could go to elance/oDesk etc and have Indians do a shitty job, but no thanks. And if I did outsource and I needed to update or change something It would be very hard to do so.
