found a real gem on netflix: classic albums

documentaries on the making of classic rock albums with the band, the engineers, some producers, a few journalist and the occasional nutter to put the band/album into historical perspective...

the song writing and recording process is covered.... pretty fucking cool. I watched Black Sabbath: paranoid, Deep Purple: smoke on the water, Motorhead: ace of spades... going to watch the sex pistols next... really great stuff...

You understand the accent? or do they subtitle it.

6 music from the bbc does classic album docs on the radio aswell.
listened to Keith Richards talking about beggars banquet this morning.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00w022y
they`re only up for a week after broadcast though.

Even if you aren't a fan - it is worth it. Judging from those you did watch, you probably don't realize what sort of proto-punks the Dead actually were - and with the Merry Prankster/acid tossed into the mix it is very interesting and quite comical. Back in the mid 60s the studios and labels were very straight laced "suits" and no one really knew much about LSD etc., so the clash in the studio between them was ripe for good drama.

Trust me, it is one of the best in the series, and I am a huge fan of all of them.

Awesome - then I even more highly recommend it because it covers the span of that artistic transition, reflected in those three specific records.

haha, i just realized i watched the cream disraeli gears episode of this series recently! awesome, ginger baker takes credit for making sunshine of your love such a hit.
he says something like"
jack comes in playing it in 16:4 beat, i said fuck that, play in a 4:2" or something to that effect. i think he also even said something about haveing soimething to do with clapton's guitaring on the track as well.

that guy is a hoot!! hahahahahah. what a character.

recommended episode.

The truly great thing about that entire entire series is how it approaches the material not through the artist so much as the art - but that ends up being so much more illuminating about the artist than anything else in terms of being a biopic.

Fan of that album and that episode - that is another one of the great aspects of the series is they don't play to the cheese but deal with the real crux of the biscuit...

yes blew me away... had no idea about the series... what surprised me from watching the motorhead episode is that the drummer from MH is the same nut as keith moon ALMOST exactly and just as damn good

Haven't seen that one yet but will check it out.

Honestly, the series is so good it helps one realize the genius of things that he or she might not otherwise have ever considered giving a second thought to listen to. I pretty much missed out on 80s music just because I was on permanent Dead tour then but I have a very open mind and completely catholic appreciation of a wide range of genres. I can listen to everything from yodeling and alphorn music to rap, jazz to tuvan throat singing, bluegrass to Beethoven, etc., there is a place for all of it in my world. Probably one of my favorite things about the Dead is the fact that they married so many types of music so well into one unique gumbo.

The Frank Zappa one for Apostrophe and Overnight Sensation is by far, one of my favorite. They also do Jay-Z's Reasonable Doubt that is actually worth the viewing!

Haven't checked the black sabbath one, but will add it, right now.

I wouldn't mind seeing a documentary on Mutt Lange and the creative behind-the-scenes stuff on his work with AC/DC, Def Leppard, Foreigner, Cars, etc.

Or Bob Clearmountain.
