Motherboar/CPU/Ram Upgrade Problem, I Need Help Please :)

Hey people, I was wondering if you could help me out here. My brother recently bought a new motherboard, ram, and processor and popped it in his case, keeping his old hard drive.

After he got it all hooked up, he went to boot up and it came up, showing him a couple of things like the energy saver crap and video card info, but after that, it won't do anything, it just sits there, Windows XP doesn't load or even try to load.

Do you have any ideas what's wrong ??

One thing that I asked is if he installed his motherboard drivers before he installed it in the new system, he said no, would that matter ?? I thought that you used to have to do that.

Any help would be appreciated.

Stay away from baby boars if the MotherBoar is around. She will stick a tusk up your ass.

Nope, he only has the one. He's willing to fo a format if he can't get it to work, but just wanted to see if it was something else first, so he doesn't reformat, only to find that he still has the problem, ha ha ha.

Sounds like the hard drive is not connected right.

If it were, you'd get something along the lines of "Unable to load OS" or whatever message the motherboard says.

Make sure his hard drive is on the primary IDE channel and set to master (or single, if the drive has that setting). Disconnect all other IDE devices until you get it to boot, then add them one by one since you're having problems.

Or get a geek friend a 6 pack of beer and pizza and it will be up and running in no time.

i just installed a new motherboard / cpu myself , and i run xp - you will have to reinstall xp; it doesn't like cpu changes for some reason. However, I didn't have to format the drive; just reinstall everything after i reinstalled the os.

good luck

Thanks for all of the ideas guys, I'm gonna give him a call and bring up all of your points and we'll see what happens.

I'll let ya know what the verdict is

MuleScrote, actually, I think that his old system was an HP prefab.

It's because XP wont run if it sees major hardware changes. MS did this to protect against piracy. Only thing you can do is format the HD.

an easy troubleshoot when hooking up a system, is first turn it on with minumum stuff plugged in.
Like first just have video, keyboard & mouse, no drives installed.
You should get a "no drives connected" type of error.
Then hook up a single floppy and try a simple boot disk.
Then try a HD... etc.

Many times I've put a system together, hurried through it then it didn't boot.
Then I relax and do it step by step and usually find what the fuck I did wrong, usually a cable or something not seated properly.

I just put in a new MB, CPU & RAM and was all excited when it arrived that I slapped it into my case before I realized that I needed a different power supply. It was now past time any computer stores around would be open, so I had to pull everything out and put the old shit back in so I could work. Had to get the PS the next day.

sorry I'm rambling
