Reading an article from the BBC about Netflix tracking some piracy sites to help them which films they purchase and HBO say that piracy for them has increased revenue.

Media companies have traditionally seen copyright infringement as a threat to their business.

However, some programme-makers acknowledge there can be benefits.

Netflix's vice president of content acquisition disclosed its use of the technique to Tweakers, a Dutch news site covering the firm's launch in the Netherlands.

"With the purchase of series, we look at what does well on piracy sites," said Kelly Merryman.

Word of mouth

The comments come a fortnight after the creator of the US series Breaking Bad said that piracy had helped his show survive, allowing it to find an audience after "very low viewership" of legal broadcasts of its first episodes.

"Piracy is certainly a double-edged sword," Vince Gilligan told entertainment news site Digital Spy.

"It does disincentivise companies from making their products if they feel they can't earn an honest living off of them, but on the other hand there was an upside to the piracy, because it got the word out in regards to Breaking Bad."

The chief executive of US media firm Time Warner also recently signalled that piracy may have worked in the favour of its HBO show, Game of Thrones.

Of course there are some benefits. But I think the question is on average does it make for a net benefit or a net loss from a long term financial viewpoint.

I guess it depends on how the companys use the information they are getting from torrent and other file sharing sites to benefit thier own companys. Netflix has been going for awhile and Time Warner, HBO certianly are in it for the long haul and seem to be making use of piracy sites.

No it will never be shut down completley just like the use of illegal drugs plus it will evolve as the internet evolves in the comming years, but at least there is a side to piracy which is benefiting some media companys who know how to use the info they get from reading what is popular on piracy sites.

I have no doubt that a reasonable level of piracy helps televisions shows that are continuing to produce new episodes.

It doesn't work that way for shows that are no longer in production.
It doesn't work at all for movies.

Most of my "piracy" is based on not being able to watch everything from anywhere. It has very little to do with trying to not pay for something. I've got a massive dvd and movie collection, but things I quite like to chill out and watch are not available on dvd or whatever, so I go searching for them.
