Nintendo on 'Path to Irrelevance', says Atari Founder

Full Article http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-23995569

"Nintendo, whose latest console has sold poorly, could be on a "path to irrelevance", the founder of legendary games company Atari has said.

In an interview with the BBC, Nolan Bushnell said the Japanese firm was left in a "very difficult position".

Games analysts have drawn parallels between Atari's doomed Jaguar console in 1993 and the struggling Wii U.

Mr Bushnell said Atari had been "abused by corporate charlatans" after a "glorious beginning".

The 70-year-old had been speaking at Campus Party, an event held at London's O2 Arena in which thousands of developers, staying in tents, worked together on various collaborative technology projects.
Founding father

Mr Bushnell, who gave a keynote speech at the event, now runs an educational software company called Brainrush.

"It's about taking game technology, mashing it up with brain science, and creating some pretty powerful software towards learning," he said.

"We have some really powerful engines right now that are knocking it out of the park. You'll hear a lot about it in the next few years."

Nintendo has been irrelevant for years.

The original Wii only sold shitloads because it was cheap and different. The games fucking sucked though and looked like a 5 year old made them.

It's no surprise people didn't fall for the Wii U.

Wouldn't accept a Nintendo Wii if someone gave one to me for free.

Nintendo is now a joke. When they talked about a new system coming it was code named Revolution and the leaked specs were fake.. then it finally came out.. The Wii.. shitty specs, crappy games and all they had as a selling point was the controller. At this point, actually, for a very long time now it has been irrelevant..

Nintendo really fucked themselves when they put out the Wii. Lack of power, no HD anything, lame games then they get more lame and bring out the Wii U.. haha Bye bye Nintendo. You had a good run, but now it's over.

I enjoyed the 64 and the GameCube. I always thought the Wii was for parties and had no real everyday use.

Nintendo64's four-way multiplayer was the height of the company.

Forget that.. They need to invest in actually competing and having a game console that has power and good games.

A couple of weeks ago I sold my super nintendo, N64, Wii, a pair of xbox 360s both with Kinects, and my PS3 on craigslist. I'm not ever buying another game console.

Nintendo has always (for me), been the "edgy" product in the console range. The Wii was new, the N64 had some classic games, the Gamecube had a few novelties. The WiiU I'm not even interested in, not slightly, what does it even do?

That being said, I'm generally out of gaming at the moment. It doesn't do much for me these days.

the opinion of any of us adults is irrelevant, nintendo aim for the kids and last time i checked, kids love

pokemon

zelda

mario

animal crossing

and i could keep going, so nintendo might be taking different paths but not a bad one. Nintendo is here to stay

They bombed hardcore on the 3ds, what idiot makes a game system that is 3d and then it comes out that 3d for kids eyes is bad. They just needed a newer version of the DS XL. Better screens etc. The camera was a good idea to let kids take pictures with.

I remember when I got a Super NES, every SEGA friend was giving me a hard time for choosing that system. Months later they'd be at my house playing Starfox and Mario Kart all fucking night.

I'd say there's no better expert on the path to irrelevance than Atari.

If Nintendo is such a joke why was Mario Kart Wii the best selling video game of all time? Nintendo crushes, video games are for kids and anything with the Pokemon or Mario name proves this time and time again.
