you're a berry berry bad man

Rich 02-28-2003 09:46 PM

If the domain was so important to them, they would've spent the $15 to renew it. That's not your problem, if you didn't get it someone else would have. :2 cents:

If she wasn't smart enough to do it, that's hers and her kid's loss.

A good piece of advice if ever I heard one. I never thought about the coma thing. Shit happens. From now on I will register new domains for several years.

if they have trademark on the name/url you might be in trouble if you don't hand it over when requested to do so-

Eh, depends on how they approach you. If she was nice about it I would consider it. After all it's probably worth alot more to her than it ever would be to you. But if someone emails you being a jackass fuck em. How were you supposed to know and it's their own damn fault it got dropped[
that's exactly what I do, the karma approach to domain sales if they're nice about it I consider giving it back, it's quite a low percentage of overall domain sales.. If they're an asshole they get an asshole back.

Today I got email from lawyers from Target I have a domain that has the word target and some numbers in it. I don't see how anyone would confuse my domain with their mark, but nonetheless they come out with their lawyers and threats. Anyone been taken to the WIPO and lost? do you have to pay costs or anything? or is the worst case scenario you just lose the domain?

El Pres 03-01-2003 05:50 AM

I'd tell them to fuck off and suck my plums, if someone is stupid enough to let a domain expire, tough.
If it's there only source of income,
rent the domain back to them for a hefty sum.

Pointless 03-01-2003 06:49 AM

simply asking them to buy it back. If they dont like the price you want then they can go fuck themselves.

jojojo 03-01-2003 07:20 AM

where do you find these expired domains?

Don't most registrars have some huge delay where they don't register it to anyone after it expires?

playa 03-01-2003 08:05 AM

only feel bad if you put P0rn on the non porn domain

I would sell it back

brutus 03-01-2003 09:23 AM

No problem... I think all of registrars send you few emails calling you to renew or change the registrar long before the expiration day and in most cases you could renew the domain few weeks / even few months after expiration - depends of the registrar. So, no one can actually accidentally loose the domain ( exluding hijacking ) etc. So, what's the problem?

I had recently decided not to renew some domains. I had so many last minute warnings about the expiry that you wouldnt believe ! There is absolutely no reason for any one to loose one if they give a shit:2 cents:

xerox 03-01-2003 11:16 AM

Most domain registrars send you notices saying "Your domain will be expired in 7 days" about 3 or 4 times until its expired. Most domain registrars have a 'auto renew" option. Its her own damn fault. Dont feel sorry for her, if she had a sucessfull ebusiness then she would have common sence to know these things and pay the $9 to renew it.

Also, when a domain is expired, you CANT use DNS or anything. So that would of been about 45 days before you registered it that her domain was unusable. My guess is its some fat guy who wanted the domain but you got it first so he is making up some story about it.

DatingGold 03-01-2003 12:23 PM

what software do you use to find expired domains?

I use www.expireddomainscript.com

funkmaster 03-01-2003 12:40 PM

I use a selfcompiled database that I monitor 4 times per day. all those expired domain services didnīt work for me.

... I live by ONE rule: if you want stuff to get done, do it by yourself !

btw: the domain is back under the former owners controll.

actually I never got any warning on a few of mine that expired with dotster.

Snake Doctor 03-01-2003 03:27 PM

Here's what I don't get. There is a delay between the time the domain expires and the time the registar lets someone else pick it up right?
So once the domain expired was the registrar still allowing the DNS to point to the owner's site? Or did it go to some "renew your domain" or just to the registar's home page?

I don't see why they would forward the DNS for a site that was no longer registered.

So her story about how she can't make a living now that you bought her domain is bullshit, she wasn't getting any of the traffic for 2 months BEFORE you picked it up.

funkmaster 03-01-2003 03:35 PM

Lenny2, thatīs not 100% correct ... I have most of my domains with domainnamesystems.com and they leave the DNS the way it was when domains have expired ...

... but I can not speak for other registrars

Phil21 03-01-2003 04:07 PM

Funk,

If all your doing is using it for google PR, then why not compromise, and give her the domain back, but make her link somewhere as you direct? The link can be fairly hidden surfer-wise of course.

Obviously not nearly as good as directly having the domain and exploiting it off the bat, but the added boost it could give the PR to your other domain would be at least something.

Then you know she's serious, and not just trying to scam you. And you don't have to feel like a jackass. :)

My annoyance right now is trying to come up w/ a simple name for a company that the fucking domain(s) are not taken. CHRIST. All those stupid fuck search engine scams have nearly anything good. Why didn't I just blow $100k 9 years ago and come out way on top? pfft.

... hahaha, same here ... itīs a a pain in the neck, isnīt it ... have you tried http://www.whois.sc/ for domain brainstorming ... maybe that site can help you a bit ??

jojojo 03-01-2003 06:37 PM

I sitll don';t understand how you can grab these domain names so fast when they expire - most registars tell em you have to wait 30-60 days first etc?

Ahhhh ok, then her story makes sense.

She very well could have changed ISP's since the time she initially registered it, so didn't get the email notification that it was going to expire.

ineedmoney 03-01-2003 10:09 PM

If they are a dick, screw em. I had a "hacking" class in college and "someone" hacked our class box and sent out 2 GIGs of email to this guy in Massachusetts. he sent the professor an email calling him out and calling him a juvenile hacker. Lets just say there entire business went down after my professor got done. Moral of this is if they are cool, be nice about it, but if not fuck em!!!
