Sleep Paralysis - Scary. As. Fuck.

It will happen to approx 50% of all people at least once in their life.

Saw something about it on TV last night. Reminded me of when it happened to me once after a 2 day party binge with little sleep about 5 years ago. Scary as fuck and I didn't even see the demons shadow people or hag many people report seeing or feel the incubus or succubus sitting on my chest. I wanted to scream at first but I could not. I was able to realize what was going on after a short time because I had heard about sleep paralysis before. Had I not heard of it I would have totally freaked the fuck out. It felt like 5 minutes but I think I was only paralyzed for 30 seconds to a minute. .

Has anybody else experienced it? Did you see demons or similar?

There is a connection between sleep paralysis and out of body experiences, alien abductions, and the occult. Pretty wild stuff.

I used to have sleep paralysis, primarily in my dorm room my freshman year of college. I'd be sleeping, then I'd suddenly wake up, unable to move, or sometimes be caught in a dream/waking sequence. Never saw anything supernatural, but we definitely had a lot of paranormal activity in that room.

Turned out the girl who had it was into the occult, had a giant pentagram drawn on the wall that the college had to repaint over several times, and used to wear jewelry made from the skulls of small animals. We had so much activity, had a paranormal investigator there who identified it as being malicious and finally ended up having a pastor come and bless everything and "seal" all the openings to the room.

Hi Camboss,

Sleep paralysis is a real thing, and its natural. No demons to worry about. Sleep paralysis protects basically stops your body from moving around too much when you're dreaming.

What is scary is when Sleep paralysis happens as you are waking up. A couple of times I was dreaming, became aware I was dreaming, and tried to wake up and couldn't. I couldn't move my arms or legs for a few seconds and just couldn't. Quite scary.

It still happens once in a while but now that I know what it is, it's no longer scary in fact it can be fun.

When I realize that I'm dreaming (called a lucid dream) I try to hang out there as much as possible. If I start to come out of it but realize I can't move, I just relax a few more seconds until I properly wake up, and thats that.

Don't freak out.

The only paranormal activity going on in your room was all in your head. Your paranormal investigator took you for a ride.

I've never had this before. I had something similar.

I was going to take a late night piss, I get out of bed ready to walk and my fucking legs don't work. I fell to the floor. After a few seconds they worked again though.

Yup. First happened to me in my late teens - woke in the middle of the night unable to move and with the sense of a malevolent something pushing down on my chest so I had trouble breathing, like a black cloud or whatever. And it went on for a decent amount of time, with me choking and struggling. Totally terrifying.

I'd never heard of it before so even though I wasn't religious or really interested in the occult, I was like - did a fucking ghost or spirit just attack me?? It truly felt like something 'evil' was in the room. Never really mentioned it to anyone, then in college during a folklore class we were looking at different cultures' interpretations of hypnagogic hallucinations (of which this is one) and like half the class spoke out "Ohhh, so THAT'S what that was", having experienced it before too.

Explainable by biology nowadays, but stuff like that makes it easy to understand why people in eras past believed in all manner of spirits and demons and whatever. Without knowledge of the mechanism that creates sleep paralysis, what else would you chalk it up as?

Tell you a true story.

Few years ago I was travelling Europe and was on the train with a group of people out Croatia way somewhere. Anyway, on this train there was a preacher and his son. We were all laughing and joking about spending like 6 hours on a train with these religious guys.
Anyway we had some pretty indepth conversations about religion etc and whilst (I do use this word!!!) I wasn't religious at all before it got me thinking.

That night I was in my hostel, in bed and just before going to sleep. I said to myself "if your real (god) prove it.."

For 3 or 4 seconds after this I was unable to move, I was literally stuck to the bed yet awake, I didn't see any demons or anything but at the time I took it as a message..

I now realise that it was sleep paralysis, maybe a drifted off for a few seconds..

Was scary at the time.

I had night terrors/sleep paralysis for a while while under a ton of stress back in my 20's. I'd think I was awake, but I couldn't move or breathe. Sometimes I would wake up inside a dream. I got Inceptioned.

Sometimes I'd be laying on my side, and it felt like someone was wrapping around me from behind, like they were snuggling. I jumped out of bed a few times ready to have a heart attack.

Once the stress stopped, the weird shit stopped.

Too many people experiencing the EXACT same "hallucinations"

Science has a theory on this phenomena but it is not conclusive.

Sleep Paralysis is the closest a person can come to the spirit world

For the record I am NOT religious

I had it 2 or 3 times in my life. 1 time i saw my mother's head floating above my bed :S.

The scary thing is the inability to scream. You want too but nothing comes out, your mouth can't open, so fucking scary.

I love dreaming because I relive previous adventures of my life. Sometimes I don't sleep for one night so I can be really sleepy/tired and have a longer dream the next day.

I've had this happen to me several times throughout the years, without every knowing what it was. It happens about once a year, sometimes not even that much. However, I also have been a lot of stress these last few months and it has been happening to me sometimes several times a week. It happened last night.

I still remember the first time it happened very vividly. It was probably around 15 years ago. A friend of mind and 2 girls were out camping in the woods. The first night, I was sleeping in the tent and I suddenly felt paralyzed. I was lying face up, with my head to the side, and could feel something creeping towards me. I felt it get closer and closer to my neck. At first it tickled, like it was rubbing a feather against my neck, then I felt something like teeth try and bite me. The whole time I was shaking, trying to come awake. It totally freaked me out. The next morning I got up and told my friend. He thought it was pretty damn weird too but neither of us had any idea what it was.

I remember the second time pretty clearly too. I was sleeping in my room, and all of a sudden it felt like something came through the door. I can still remember that it felt/looked like a great ball of fire getting closer and closer. I was fighting like crazy to wake up until I finally did. Very fucking scary.

I actually remember a lot of these and they are all pretty unpleasant, some more than others. It always feels like I'm shaking in them, but now I think it's just me trying to wake up. In many of them I remember something or someone striking me a blow, and me falling down, slowly, then unable to move. There are usually shadows in all of them. Another similar characteristic is that in about 90% of these I'm dreaming but still in my position in the bed. Also, all the dreams feel INCREDIBLY real.

Last night's was also scary. I think I was on a basketball court (I had been thinking about basketball the last few days) and then I was surrounded by shadows that tackled me and held me to the ground. Fuck, it scared the shit out of me.

Another similar thing that happens in all of these. It is always the first dream of the night. As in, I go to bed, have this thing happen, wake up (scared) then manage to sleep the rest of the night without it happening again. It never happens twice in a night (thank God).

Yes I had this a few times too, wake up suddendly, want go out of bed, half body can put you out of bed, but the other half sleeps and you fall in ground. I had no any hallucinations in this case.

However, Someone Who Isn't Me, and is atheist but likes to see stuff, used to see and to talk with several kind of stuff in day time with or without taking [stuff]. Looked much like Max Ernst paintings below.

Had it happen once, around 7 years ago. It was the classic scenario, dark room, paralysis, the figure in the room, the overwhelming feeling of horror/terror.
In my experience, the figure which looked like the evil witch from the Disney movie Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs, hunched, cloaked & hooded, ugly face was by my feet rather than upon me.
All I could move was my eyes. This seemed to last around 2 minutes and then in a flourish it seemed the entity grabbed the blankets and pulled them over me. The feeling was akin to having a warm wave flow over me.
It was then I regained movement and upon sitting up the figure had vanished.
I have been fascinated with the paranormal since a child, so I was was aware of exactly what was happening to me.
Despite this, the experience was terrifying and quite unsettling.
It's never happened since, so that's my one and only story.

You might have RISP... Recurrent Isolated Sleep Paralysis

Super rare.

Research this. You might be able to use it to do some amazing shit like Astral projection and out of body experiences if you can figure out how to avoid being scared and "play" with it.

Yes I read the entire wiki entry plus some other articles just now. I don't think it's RISP since the episodes are very short and happen rarely (once a year, except for lately). Also I never had a back to back episode. Mine always happen when I'm falling asleep, and never when I'm waking up.

I read a ton of youtube comments and the people who believe in Jesus all say that by "saying" that Jesus is their savior in their mind when they are in sleep paralysis, it makes the evil vanish immediately. Found that interesting.

Doesn't make sense since you cannot speak while you are in the paralysis. Maybe they think it. Anyway, for me the experience is so frantic that I don't see anyway of "enjoying" it or using it to any advantage.

Quote:
As the correlation with REM sleep suggests, the paralysis is not entirely complete; use of EOG traces shows that eye movement is still possible during such episodes; however, the individual experiencing sleep paralysis is unable to speak.[12]

I love self hypnosis/meditation and have used psychedelics enough to have no fear of the paranormal.

The people who see entities and have paranormal experiences... well... it's because their real life is boring and their subconscious mind is trying to excite them. Long term boredom is actually a threat to brain plasticity and emotional well being.

Right, they "speak" it in their mind. ie, think it.

It seems only the people with RISP can figure out how to use it for something other than being scared shitless

I wouldn't worry about this too much. Having "Deja Vu" at the very least, 2 times per day like myself is far more worrying. Especially in totally new scenarios I have no memory of, This is also whilst I am awake. My dreams can be weird, but I often go for atleast 2 weeks without a single dream. Seem familiar to anybody?

Very good possibility someone had butt sex with you during that time.

Tried it a handfull of times, scares the shit out of me everytime.. i know i am awake but can't open my eyes or move my body - i think it probably last for about 30 seconds, but feels like minutes.. i noticed i happening the most when i was too hot in the bed, and waked up sweating a lot. Glad to hear other people tried it too

got any more info/links on this? I get this a lot also (as a standalone experience, when in the nodding off stage of sleep - it's like the sound of metal on metal, but as a feeling in my brain), never taken E though so may be a variation of the experience you just described. Been trying for years though to google what it is.

I'm a militant atheist and I once woke up in the middle of the night with a small black cloud sitting on my chest and seeming to talk to me in spiteful way. It said so that's what you want to do and laughed.

I can see why people associate this with our conception of what demons look like but I really feel this is something in the mind and will be different for each person.
