I tended to also go for .net's and .org's, I find these can do quite well, in fact sometimes obscure ones like .org.uk can rank highly.

I have over 60 domains. Buying all 3 of each would get expensive!

I find that I really only have a use for the .com's... There are only a couple of .coms that I also bought the .nets for.

Usually, if I can lock down the .com, the twitter handle, and sometimes the facebook url, I'm happy!

Sure, I don't have any duplicates myself, but sometimes there's a domain so good that the .net and .org can do very nicely

I usually only buy the .nets if I have a use for them. Like the site I use for things like TGP posts. The .com is the main fully functional site. The .net is where I host galleries intended to be posted elsewhere. Keeps me from cluttering shit up.

I only have a couple of domains I do that with though..
