How did I get here?

Long story short, I've met a series of setbacks for the last 2 years, none of which could have been detected or even avoided, I spent 6 months on a new mainstream project that fell flat on it's ass due to 3rd parties and now we are back to square one on that. I've blown through what little savings we had left to keep bills as current as they could be, food, diapers, meds for the kids etc etc and for the last few moths we've literally become a zero income household.

I have offers for work that are "pending" I have content sales that are "pending" most recently I had an individual who was to pay an deposit for custom video content vanish off the net for the last 7 days, that deposit alone would have saved our assess.

Why Don't You.....

Over the past few months I have tried damn near everything to generate money (all the legal avenues I mean lol) Talked to friends, family, local and state agencies etc etc, either we do not qualify or there is a 1 year plus wait for help, and I also just found out they closed the shelter here in town so even that as a worst case scenario is no longer viable.

What Happens If You Raise The Needed Money?

I have a series of goals and plans in regards to the money, the first $100 will keep the phone and internet up for another 30 days (due for shutoff tomorrow) after that the next will go to the landlord to halt the eviction and give us another 30-60 days to come up with the rest of the back rent and current rent.

The total target money needed to get us back into the black would be just under $6k and that would also provide a little breathing room for the next few month or so. (ONE good sale could solve all the issues)

Future Plans:

I've recently gotten back into fulltime production of my 3D toon content (have not made content for licensing in the last 2 years) The current need for 3D Toon content deff lies in video content as little to none exists, and everyone wants it.

In my downtime I've been learning steps to speed up my rendering times, added new software to my processes and am now happy to announce that I will VERY SOON be switching up to video production as my core content production creating 5-7 min HD video content for licensing. Current projections and tests show I SHOULD be able to produce up to FIVE 5-7 minute videos per week once I have my new systems in place (need another $2k - $3k to make that happen double that number and I can double the video output by setting up a renderfarm)

Once I am able to start the video production money shouldn't be an issue as everyone seems to be begging for video content and only 2 that I know of are even attempting to create it, and my prices and quality will not be beaten.

So that's it, I come to you all hat in hand asking not for a hand out but a hand up, and not asking something for nothing, or making promises to repay etc etc, this is your chance to pick up my content at fire sale prices, secure exclusive content for a fraction of the normal prices and help a 15 year vet of this industry save his house and family.

Great question, and kind of a thorn in my side to be honest, I've been trying for years to get into the mainstream animation world, but I lack a few things most of those places want, I'm self taught so no paperwork backing of my talents, I don't know anyone in the right places to help get my foot in the door, and I'm by no means a modeler which is what most look for (or at the very least they want you to have modeling experience along with whatever else you can do)

I do have a small chance to work with a big game company thanks to an artist friend of mine who just landed a contract, he is going to pass my portfolio to them in the next few weeks once he is more secured in his spot there.

yeah it's official I want to roll the clock back an hour or so and triple check those first 2 posts, and maybe not have been so damn flustered when I wrote it.

Honestly, in the past things HAVE always worked out in the end, but I've never been in this spot before in the past I've fell on hard times before lost everything had to start over, and it was fine as it was just myself (my oldest lived with my ex wife for most of her life)

But now with a wife and a 1 year old, and 3 year old added to the mix it really makes things a lot more scary.

Wish we lived in a larger town so there would be job opportunities or even a pawn shop but we live in a tiny ass tourist town closest "big city" is almost 2 hours away.

Thanks, and no you missed nothing, I take great pride that (as far as I am aware lol) I've never screwed anyone over or had an unhappy client, I bust my ass in everything I do and when it comes to my 3D Toons I've always strive to have the best quality for the lowest prices

I'll be honest here, take off my marketing hat, and speak total gospel truth....

there was a time I totally believed that and I did in fact move on to other things, but then while I was away I talked to artists and companies (and saw for myself) that the numbers were still not only there but still slowly growing.

more companies are creating toon networks, most recently Toonkings was launched. from what I hear through the grapevine CE now has a standalone toon program and an in house team creating 3D Toons around the clock, others are also starting to hire cheap artists as well.

Tube sites are FILLED with 3D Toon ads, and I've heard they do very well, (sadly most are false ads and promise content that is not really there BUT it STILL does very well)

My biggest issue was I refused to 'adapt' and switch to creating video content, but neither did the rest of the original artists that created this niche back in the 90's.

For too long it took way too long for us to create the video content and it was deff not profitable or time effective for us to do so.. case in point: up till a few months ago it could take up to 30 hours to render 1 min of HD video content, my video packages took up to 6 months to create, NOW using various software I can produce high quality videos 5-7 mins long in a fraction of the time.

as for me saying "next big thing" the last few years when I've said that it was never about 3D Toon content photos and or videos, but instead the STILL growing virtual world market, I still believe that virtual worlds ARE the next big thing and will eventually in a way replace the current web in terms of "websites"

I said this same thing in the 90's about 3D Toons and most ppl laughed at me and said I was crazy, "NO ONE will EVER pay for fake porn" "Toons will NEVER Sell" well I was right about that, many people made bank with toons over the years and many still do. as I continue to adapt with the market I too will keep making money and videos will do that, I have straight up missed money on the table due to my lack of video production.

Great question and I kind of touched on it in prior posts but I'll expound...

I live in a small tourist type town, little to no jobs available at all, and those that are open are flooded with applications within moments (HUGE unemployment rate all around Michigan sadly) Most times the jobs to friends or family or locals first.

I'm not a local, and no matter where I have applied over they years I always get either "over qualified" or "we'll keep you in mind"

I've checked out online job sites like Odesk and elance

I hear ya, and like I said there was a time I totally believed it was time to move on....

I am actually one of the co-founders of the 3D toon niche, everything you see today and over the years has been a direct result of what myself and 3-4 other artists did from 1998 - 2004 by 2004 I was dubbed "The godfather of 3D Toons" and I worked with, consulted, sold content to almost every company that got into the market.

It was ALWAYS profitable and it still is today

I will say this reluctantly and somewhat cryptically

Lets say you have a great job, make say, $5k - $8k a month or more, stock away a ton of savings, have yourself a great little nest egg.

Then you leave the job because you get the feeling that it's time may be past and due to the way it's being handled now by some shady people it's going to implode and start loosing people money and maybe even get taken out by laws and or credit card companies.

then things happen and those savings go away due to family emergencies, and trying to help people who straight up fucked you in return. and over a short time you're left with nothing and have to rebuild from scratch.

Is it then the fault of your work choice that money is now gone and or tight?

the fault lies in me for being trusting when I should have been cautious, and then things that were totally out of my control (family emergencies)

It was always profitable for me, and I know it still can be AS LONG as I continue to switch to the video route, companies want video content and there is a void there to fill it. many want exclusive content and that brings in more money.

I am the farthest away from willing to drown for my ideas or beliefs my biggest problem was I STOPPED producing content for the last 2 years and THAT is one of the core reasons I am where I am today the other is the total lose of my savings.

It's extremely average Poser work, and there's tons of it out there. You can't tell it apart from any of the other cookie cutter 3d erotica.

I hope Loki gets out of financial trouble, because I've been there also -- but the game needs to upped.

But I do give props for developing a concept and putting some work out there.

I'd take a bit of offense to that except the bulk of the "cookie cutter" stuff as you called it IS my stuff lol, I'm the first to agree it could be better and anyone who has followed my art over the years will agree each set I do DOES indeed get better and better.

I want (and have been learning) how to get more and more realistic renderings, lighting effects various shaders etc etc.

I'd love to produce the type of "stolen" content I see all over the place and I'm getting there, esp with the new methods I'm using my upcoming stuff will be far better then what I've created over the years.

3d animated porn sells. I know because I made a killing with it over the years and still do. There are three ways to make money with 3d animated porn that I have seen

1. The bait and switch with the tube sites. Tube sites often show short, appealing animated clips to bring the customer in for a "Free membership." They then bang the hell out of their card, and then leave the customer with a members area that has nothing close to what the member thought he was going to get. Even though practice is shady, the niche obviously converts or there wouldnt be banners for 3d porn on nearly every tube site.

2. The second way is to produce extremely high quality 3d porn. This is extremely expensive and time consuming and it has to be damn near Pixar quality to be able to retain the customer. Here is an trailer of just one example of a high quality animation we did: http://vstroker.com/videos/katietrailer.html. This sells.

3. You use your animation talents and put together a 3d adult game.The bar has been set really low for what people think is good when it comes to adult 3d games. For under 10k you can throw up a site, use a crappy game engine, and get two characters screwing and then build upon that. My first game I started in 2007 for under 15k and it has done over a mil in sales. Of course affiliates take about half of that but not a bad return on an investment.

My advice would be to partner up with someone and figure out how to do #3. 3d stills are COMPLETELY dead and the only use I can see someone having for them is to fill up a members area to give the perception there is more going on in the members area than there really is. If you have the talents, then I would recommend #2 but as you probably know the bar for this is much higher than it used to be. The consumer is looking for motion capture quality animations or they just aren't interested. The tube sites promote god awful animations but the surfer never knows because he only saw a 4 second teaser before he gave up his card to be tagged. Little does he know that what he saw in that "preview" is pretty much the entire animation.

QFT 100% I'm actually in the process of doing #2 and #3 as well as what I did years back getting artists together to form a type of co-op / stable the end goal is for all the remaining artists to learn the new tricks myself and 2 others uncovered to speed up the rendertimes (you would not believe the frame rate now if I told you lol)

As for still content not selling I'd deff have to disagree with you there, it might not sell for you guys but I can point you (in private sorry) to at least 3 companies totally striving with 90% photo only content.

but as you said it does work for filler content which is what I have preached for the last few years before I left in 2011.

My first game I started in 2007 for under 15k and it has done over a mil in sales. Of course affiliates take about half of that but not a bad return on an investment.

My advice would be to partner up with someone and figure out how to do #3. 3d stills are COMPLETELY dead and the only use I can see someone having for them is to fill up a members area to give the perception there is more going on in the members area than there really is. If you have the talents, then I would recommend #2 but as you probably know the bar for this is much higher than it used to be. The consumer is looking for motion capture quality animations or they just aren't interested. The tube sites promote god awful animations but the surfer never knows because he only saw a 4 second teaser before he gave up his card to be tagged. Little does he know that what he saw in that "preview" is pretty much the entire animation.

Option #4 would be to do something in between #2 and #3 with the inclusion of an editor so you can have affiliates sell a product to consumers and webmasters who would be interested in skinning their own models and creating their own animated scenes.

You may be right on the stills. I saw a HUGE decline in 3d still type content sales 4 years ago. Part of this was the economy, but I think a larger part of it was animated clips became easier to make. It started to become a lot easier to produce high res 3d animated clips in a much shorter of period of time. They still sucked for the most part but it looked better than stills. You also had a bunch of hobbyist on the Erotica forums who were making animations for poser. So for 100 bucks you could get some kid to setup a scene with a pre made animation and let it render for a day and then you would have a clip. You then repeat this 10 times or so and then you have the foundation for a new site for 1-2k that contain completely animated content.

My brutally honest opinion/advice. You cant keep kicking the 3d stills dead horse any longer. You should have gotten away from it 3-4 years ago or hedged by getting into another area. If it does produce income it is too small of niche to make it worth the effort since you are literally competing with 1000s of kids doing the same stuff. If you can figure out the the game situation that is your best shot. Or maybe since you know the industry well you should put yourself in a broker sort of role and team up with animators that already produce high level content and resell it for them. Thanks. It costs a lot and took a long time. It is completely interactive too. So the faster the guy uses our device the faster he is fucking the toon.

The guys over at bonetown, d-dub.com did it. They are awesome with this stuff.
