How much can i ask from a blog post writer?

If i hire a writer 4hrs a day, five days a week. I provide him with a list of galleries, and ask him to write a 200 words post for each gallery.
How many posts should i expect from him per day (4 hrs)?

depends how well you want the posts written, and how much you are paying.

Hiring a cheap 3rd world writer, who is probably juggling 5 low paid gigs at once, or paying an actual writer well to deliver a quality product?

I'd expect 5-7 posts per hour if they are only 200 words, so 20-28 on a 4 hour shift. This is assuming they are native speakers and know about the niche they are writing in - no other research needed.

I would have thought one post an hour, 2 tops! I was going to say 4/6 posts in a 4 hour shift.

A decent writer can do about 1000 words an hour. Obviously, this changes a bit depending on if they're flicking through files, coming up with story lines on the fly, that type of thing. But if I was given a set of galleries and knew the content well enough to write about it, I'd be upset at myself if I didn't at least hit 800/900 words an hour.

This is pure writing, mind you. Blog posts (like setting up images, links, that sort of thing) take a big longer - but certainly at least 2-3 blog posts an hour.

are you giving this writer keyword lists? I do some writing myself and I find it easier when customers give me nice keyword lists

a keyword list, hm....is more work for the webmaster and maybe also for the writer, always thinking of these given keywords....if it's a good writer, he'll know how to write that goolge will like it and sometimes less is more

I don't think I could even type 1000 words of pure nonsense in an hour.

                              I bet you could. ;)

Just as an example for the OP - I was given a set of 100 images to add text to today - one 4 to 5 word title and a 2 sentence description. I broke them up into groups of 25 and got that first group done in about 40 minutes, with a total of around 850 words in that doc.

200 words is nothing. I'm writing this now and it's 1:48 pm and I'm sure if I was describing a sex scene that I also had thumbnails and a clip, I could tell you all about the girl and the guy and what they're doing together and reach 200 words quickly. What's the quality though? This would be poor because it's just a run on sentence mostly. However it's close to halfway to the goal and only took less than 1 minute.

200 words for a scene is a long descript. IMHO. Good luck.

edit: seems my clock is 5 minutes fast compared to the board. Or.. I'm from the future.

Never pay anyone a flat fee weekly or a per word price. Neither will get you what you want.

Instead, set out how many posts you need done along with the style and general length. Set a deadline, agree on a price for the project and get it done. That way you have cost certainty, you know exactly what will be written and when it will be completed. The text will be better and the parameters to grade it are simple. If the writer performs well... rehire them, if not... don't

Personally I would assume I could 2-4 posts per hour depending on what you needed. If these posts are in a niche I know well and all I have to do is look at a gallery and write a 200 word post about the gallery I could do them fairly quickly. If I needed to use keywords in the gallery, put the gallery up on wordpress, add links or write them in specific style it would take more time.

It isn't just about cranking out 200 words of text that go along with the gallery. You need to then proofread it and you will need to come up with something new and unique for each gallery. That is where the time is taken up. It really all depends on the quality of the posts. The better the quality, the fewer per hour you will get.

Many writers are ready to go 1c/word so at that rate you would pay $2 per 200 word post. If you were to pay $14 an hour you would get 7 posts, thus 28 in 4 hours. So 25 I'd think is perfectly doable.

The EngineFood guy is on the money: you should always do writing jobs on a per-job basis. It's not like programming where a request could take an hour or three, writing can pretty much always be quantified with a +-10% deviation.

It makes sense to do jobs this way: a writer is going to fully commit to doing a solid amount of work to increase his pay per hour and then, there are no surprises when you next batch comes in.

                                                On my mobile: didn't proofread!

Also, already had two contacts for work from this thread: always looking for more. Hit me up on the sigs for quality text. We got nothin' but love for blog posts. ;)

I've been able to do a massive amount of work per hour, regularly.

Full force, I can write about 500words every 10 minutes (no breaks, on a good day). If I have to think more than usual or do more busy work, I might be able to hit 500 words in 20-25 minutes.

I'm not trying to plug myself here, but I could probably do about 35-45 pieces (as per your requirements) in 4 hrs.
