I don't think we'll find many that are intrested in the physical well-being of webmasters. LOL.
Well first off a healthy webmaster is a webmaster who lives longer. Thats means more years to drive traffic to their site, more years to buy hosting. lol
To the guy who said about Atkins it rocks we have been doing it for a few weeks now and I have lost 30 lbs so far.My wife has to lose slower because if she loses too fast we are out of business lol. Another good atkins site www.atkinsfriends.com . Also if someone wants to put up a site I got the domain www.heavy2health.com
Originally posted by Lane ok, who wants to organize this? (make the website, and handle the entries etc..)
I can make the website. But I don't think anyone participating on the competition should be handling the entries. (this case... entries=100$ fee). When the 100$ is paid, he or she is part of the competition, and I'll add him to the website.
is this ok? I can also do weekly/monthly updates if people want...

I think cash. More motivation.
Depends on how many participants we get.. 100$-500$?
If we get plenty of participants the 500$ might be a bit too much for someone, although it would be sweet to win like $5k.
If it's a money bet, should there be a start-up fee? like 100$ from everyone that participates. If they quit, no refund.
I can eat more than $500 in one sitting.......

If I had the spare coin I would be in. Bu tlet me ask does someone know of a good site where you can find out how many calories there are in your meals?
SIG TOO BIG! Maximum 120x60 button and no more than 3 text lines of DEFAULT SIZE and COLOR. Unless your sig is for a GFY top banner sponsor, then you may use a 624x80 instead of a 120x60.

there are loads of sites that have tons of nutritional info, -- just do a google search and find which you like best.
Over the past year or so I have been trying to find inspiration...and there are lots of sites with strategies and success stories...
I started counting my calories and writing down what I eat and have found this to be very helpful. I sometimes find myself doing a google search to find out hgow many calories are in a cantelope...when I start adding up what I ate that day.
Well I too have some weight to lose and this sounds like fun. But as to the Atkins Diet, terrible idea, sure you burn off the fat quick but with risk of damaging your body. I know, I used to be a trainer. Before anyone tries it or for those who are doing it, check out this article Risks of the Atkins Diet
There is just no logic in cutting out all carbs your body needs just to lose weight at a phenomenal rate. Most all quick weight loss is unhealthy and when you reach your goal and stop the diet, you are much more likely to gain that weight back just as fast plus extra.
Just wanted to give you guys some info, I'd like to see us all get healthy and fit but not at the risk causing possible damage.
You can count me in.

I am planning to lose 20 lbs over the next couple of months, in addition to the 7 lbs I lost during Feb. but it sounds like 20 lbs won't be enough for me to compete against you crazy people.
I wish I could get in on a contest like this, sounds like wonderful motivation, but I'm afraid this is going to be too much for me.
Maybe we need a more modest version for those of us who want to lose a little less... or "leagues" you can compete in, based on how much you weight initially and/or how much you plan to lose.

Too complicated. Isn't the percentage of lost weight since initial weight on March 1st, until july 1st good?

Obviously you don't know about the Atkins way of life. You DO eat carbs...healthy carbs...green vegetables...low glycemic carbs. In the weight loss stage you eat anywhere from 20-50 grams of carbs a day. During the maintenance stage you can eat as many healthy low glycemic carbs as you want to without gaining weight. I do agree with you that when you stop dieting you are likely to gain back any weight that you lost. But as stated in the books Atkins has out, this is not a diet...it is meant to be a way of life. Go to www.atkinsfriends.com if you really want to learn about it.
We need someone to take care of the bets (hold the money).
Which leads to the list of participants, and I can then make the small website with rules and crap.

How about a moderator of this board like Boneprone, or even Lensman...I doubt lensman would need to skim an extra $1-$2K from anyone

If the website I'm about to do has even monthly updates (with pictures) it can't be really done. PPL will notice if you suddenly lose a lot of weight instantly... I think.
The way that I got started was to look at my bad (food) habits one at a time... starting with my worst addiction -chocolate bars- so I went cold turkey on those for about a month, and then took on the other bad habits, junk food stops, fast food etc etc
since I was drinking a lot of diet pop, One of the other things I found out that many of them contain a sodium based chemical that actually makes you hungrier, so I trashed that and got a water dispenser from costco and the 5 gal water jugs
Why not have everyone get a body fat test done - then one every month. It would be more reliable than just weight. If people are working out with weights, they will lose more fat but gain more muscle, so the scales won't show as much difference.

It's a lot better than an absolute number of pounds, but I still don't think I can compete. One guy posted and said he weighed about 300 lbs. Theoretically, he could lose 1/3 of his weight and be fine. If I lost 1/3 of my weight, I would be underweight and I have no desire to try to lose an unhealthy amount in order to be a part of the challenge.
I guess I'll just have to stick it out on my own, and wish those who do compete the best of luck.
I'd love to do this, guys! But first I'd need the entry fee and I can't afford it right now. :o(
But I'll be watching!

If you had actually researched the Atkins diet, you would have known that it isn't about NO carbs, it's about LESS carbs.
And you gain the weight back after ending any diet/eating plan, which is why Atkins is a Way of Life, not a short-term fix.
My normal weight is 150lbs but I was 180lbs until I started last week. Now I'm down to 170lbs. I think being 160-165lbs for 6' is good. Plus I can get rid of my middle tire.

if 3 or 4 guys were in for $10K - $15k US each I'd be game to try a weight loss contest. Money would have to be paid upfront to a neutral trusted 3rd party person before the bet began. And of course we'd have to ALL weigh in personally all together in front of the same neutral 3rd party person at the start and finish. Say at the summer internext and finish at the winter internext? or even start at the toronto convention and finish at the summer internext in flordia.
anyone got the guts (litterally) for that CHALLANGE?

I think it might be best to have all the contestants taking pictures before the contest starts, then after a few months or whatever, post the new pictures, and whoever looks the best wins.
I've got the book right here...looks like about as good as time as any to start
I honestly don't care if I win the money...I just wanna get back to being just a fat guy and not a morbidly obese guy...LOL
You can do it! You will feel like shit the first few days, while you detox from the carbs, but then you will have an amazing burst of energy. Be strong those first few days, and you've got it made. And follow the Rules of Induction! Read the book all the way through before you start, then read it again.
I stopped posting so much on GFY, started walking like 1-2 hours/day, started cooking--shopping for veggies and fruit, stopped going to bars on a regular basis, cut back on meat -- I think I look a lot better. Mostly I did all that because I have bad skin from smoking (I've only smoked for 2 years), alcohol, and crappy diet -- According to the Chinese, your skin health is based on a healthy lungs/liver. To have good skin you have to totally change your diet/lifestyle. I've seen real results already. I'm down to a good weight now after maybe two weeks of this... I just need to get back to the track so I can get some definition, find a heated pool somewhere to work on my upper body a bit and I'll be done.
IMHO Losing weight is not so much about diet and exercise -- that's the easy part -- it's very psychological. Most of our cravings for greasy/fat/sweet foods, alcohol, nicotine, caffine, etc. come from stress... stress comes in many forms... anxiety, grief, frustration, anger, etc. etc. The real battle for health goes on in your head...

Well let's see, do a search on the net for the risks of the atkins diet or something similiar and see what comes up. Done the research?, did you do any other than what the atkins way of life is explained and detailed in atkins books and sites. Let's talk about research, why are doctors now NOT recommending people use this as a form of weight loss and why do at least 80% of the nutrional experts disagree with the Atkins Diet. Personally I don't care what you do to your bodies, but it is always a good idea to look at the pros and cons of any diet. We only get to use this body of ours once. Every one is entitled to their opinion, I just think it is funny how the couple people who replied to my message did so with vehemence, go ahead look it up, like there is no debate.
I think this is a great idea though, to many unhealthy people in the world today. I wish all you guys/gals the best of luck.

I need to drop about 20lbs. Not gonna win any contests, but I've been sitting on my ass too much, drinking too much, and eating too much recently too.
About Atkins.. ultra low carb diets were originally intended as a last resort for completely or mostly sedentary people. Your body needs aerobic exercise to metabolize carbohydrates properly, otherwise they get stored as fat. The answer is to get your ass off the couch and exercise, not stuff your face with shitty food that will make you lose weight simply by virtue of the fact your body is unable to process all that fatty stuff.
The 'detox from the carbs' shit is hilarious. Your body should be in a state where it needs carbohydrates because it is performing regular aerobic exercise. On the flip side, you cannot perform extended aerobic exercise without gobbling carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are what your body metabolizes to make glycogen, which is the fuel that your liver stores to power your muscles. If you run out of glycogen during exercise, you will 'bonk'.. an utterly miserable state.
I had a cyclist friend who did Atkins who bonked out so badly on a trail near here that he ended up being airlifted to a hospital. His blood sugar was in the 50's when he arrived. Not fun!
