I've had to chase a black bear away in the woods a couple of times and it works. The "don't back down" advice is only effective against wild bears not black bears that are accustomed to humans imho. Those ones know we're pussies.

Black bears naturally eat berries and plants, only if they are starving or have some kind of health issues like rabies or something, would they likely harm you. They rarely bother humans unless they are in danger or their cubs are nearby. The "stand your ground" approach should actually work under any normal encounter. They were eating, there was a whole congregation of them and she likely was not only scared, but also scared them and probably tried to "shoo" them away.
