I remember acoustic modems, where you put the phone on the modem itself. I started out with one of those bad boys. I used to use Archie search all the time through the early (non-graphical) 'net. Telnet for MUDs, ftp for trading 0-day warez, and many more utilities, on VAX and Unix.Comment

I remember upgrading from a 300bps modem to a 1200 and thought I was king shit. Dialing in to random BBS's and interacting/chatting with people live was a mind fuck back in the day. Also downloading pixelated porn static gifs that took 45 minutes to load up on your screen

It was bad, not awesome! I was around (after 1988 really, from commodore and up) and I remember it was damn slow, even I got an HST 9600 which was very new at the time. Also you hit the "busy line" in BBSs this was frustrating, is like 2 people connect is a ddos already. Just it was cheaper than internet since I was using bluebox really, no one of my friends made normal calls.Comment
