David Cameron: I'm ready for a 'big argument' over pornography

Internet firms must do more to block "depraved and disgusting" images online, David Cameron said today, as he told how he is "desperately worried" over his own children's access to pornography.

The Prime Minister said there would be a "big argument" and "very, very strong conversations" with internet companies, as they come under pressure to remove illegal images of children and monitor legal pornography.

He will tomorrow threaten the companies, such as search engine giants Google, Microsoft and Yahoo, with legislation unless they completely wipe out access to images of children being sexually abused.

In a key speech, he will say the internet firms have a "moral duty" to act.

Mr Cameron also said he would press for "extra steps" to stop children getting access to pornography on household computers or their mobile phones.

Speaking to the BBC's Andrew Marr Show, he said the "biggest argument" would be getting the companies to block access to child abuse.

“Let’s be fair to the companies, there are some good things that they’re doing – they’re making public wi-fi safer, that’s good; they’re flashing up warnings, some of them, when people are searching for things that are wrong," he said.

"But there is this problem, yes, that some people are putting simply appalling terms into the internet in order to find illegal images of child abuse – and remember every one of these pictures is a crime scene – and they’re getting results.

“I think it’s wrong that they should get results and we need to have very, very strong conversations with those companies about saying 'No, you shouldn't provide results for some terms that are so depraved and disgusting I can’t even say them on your show'.

"I think there's going to be a big argument there, and if we don't get what we need we'll have to look at legislation."

Mr Cameron acknowledged that politicians have not done enough in the past to prevent the spread of indecent images.

In terms of legal pornography, the Prime Minister said he also wanted to do more to stop children getting access to adult images online.

“We need to do more on this as well, and I speak as a parent – I’ve got a nine-year-old, a seven-year-old, and a soon-to-be three-year-old," he said.

"I worry desperately about this and I know parents do. Because when we’re offline, there are rules about what films you can see in a cinema, what age you have to be to buy alcohol or cigarettes or what have you; but on the internet, there aren’t those rules so we need to help parents with control."

Downing Street had wanted internet service providers (ISPs) to introduce “default on” filters that would oblige home owners to opt in to receive violent or sexually graphic material.

However, the internet companies argue that this would encourage complacency among parents and Britain could be accused of censorship.

The Government’s Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP) has published research that suggests more than half of those who view child abuse images go on to commit abuse themselves.

Last month Google announced that it was giving £1 million to the internet Watch Foundation, which trawls the web for and reports offensive images.

However, the company says it is not responsible for policing the internet.

I honestly have no problem with this whatsoever. This is no different from a sex cinema having blacked out windows. You have to GO THROUGH the door to see the action, and only over18s are allowed through the door. Those are the paying customers, not minors.
I don't mind at all if this is the situation the adult industry would be in, ACROSS THE BOARD. But it won't be. It'll be that sites based in the UK have age controls in place, and all the kids continue to jerk off over the free tubes.

For blocking minors from accessing pornography that basically means some kind of AVS. I'm all in favor of that. I remember the days of AVS were boom days for this industry. But then again part of me realizes that the industry scumbags would only use it to further their own monopolies and the free porn situation probably wouldn't change much as these idiots would still give it out for free to the people who verify which they would also probably do for free for them.

But if you could bring back the old days where most of the porn required a credit card and some fee over $30 a year you would see a huge boom to this entire industry.

Since his brothers are so far away, each can video chat him whenever they want (and vice versa), but nobody else can. She can also view all of his activity anytime she chooses.

They need to be looking more along those lines.

Honestly I am conflicted. For business I would love to see porn require some sort of AVS for the reason I explained. But otherwise I worry about censorship and other abuse.

Being real right now any 7 year old can type in "pornhub.com" or "youporn.com" and see the nastiest porn right on the front page with a couple clicks. I can see where maybe this is a problem. Parents can't watch everything and even if they do usually one of the kid's friend's parents does not. I can see where there needs to be some middle ground here at least. Like maybe softcore only out in the open? Something along these lines. Something somewhat reasonable that we can live with.
