    Google is shit for searching now..

    I just did a long tail search for someone and Google provided me just 3 results on the first page (out of 290,000 results).

    The first two were unrelated wikipedia articles (one about concentration camps and the other about the Palastine conflict)

    The 3rd result was an unrelated .pdf from some university in newzealand.

    I found what I was looking for an page 3.

    Think I might start using Bing more.

      I use Bing a lot these days - The internet is a fickle beast, it wouldn't take a lot to drive Google into second place.....

          I think Google's new algorithm is yet to stabilize. Several businesses have been hit badly but Google says, it only wants to show up quality links at the top. We all know about it.

          I do not understand what they are up to actually.

                      It would take an entire culture shift, especially in the UK.

                      Google's power is extraordinary and its arrogance is shocking. Perhaps that will bring it down in the end, we can all hope.

                          Google threw me a shitload of traffic 3 days ago, but it was only for that 1 day. The next day up to including today, I am back scraping the bottom of the Google barrel with hardly any traffic.

                              Matt Cuts said in one of his last interviews that Penguin 2.0 will roll out in stages in the next few months ... So I think a few important updates and changes have yet to come in the upcoming weeks..

                                          Yes I started to open bing at times, it was like 10 years I was not opening a second search engine at times.

                                              Same here. Google isn't able to index everything any longer. In many cases it's almost random whether a page and term deep within a site will appear in the index. They have also made a lot of "enhancements" which do questionable things. For instance if I type a four word search I might get 50,000 results but if I add on a word I now get 5 million results due tot he extra word. I have to use verbatim search to get anything useful and that is hit or miss.

                                              For anything adult related (not just porn) the image search has been rendered almost useless. Bing is now the one to use.

                                              Incidentally, does anyone know of a good meta search which merges Bing and Google results into one? Not just something which shows the results separately but something which merges them in an intelligent way.
