The 'Value' of Health Insurance
For those who think they can't afford health insurance, I am going to say that the savings on prescriptions alone will easily pay for it if you do not have any. Even if you do not have any chronic aliment, but something as simple as allergies.
In the past few months, I have finally gotten around to investing a little more time and energy in my own health as I have hired more people to take over the day to day operations. For the better part of two decades, I spent most of my time and energy focused on my business alone. One of things things, at age 40, is to finally get allergy tested. I have suffered from allergies my entire life, but never had gotten around to being tested. At the completion of the test, I am given a couple of scripts. Savings after insurance, $180.00. I went to the DR's a few weeks prior for some other testing, and was given an allergy spray, and some another allergy medicine to try (singular). Savings after insurance, $380.00 for those couple of scripts. The point is, my insurance costs me around $281.00/month. Within a few months of scripts for various things, and the blood work, etc. I more a less paid my premiums with the savings on the prescriptions alone, which does not even get into the savings on your charges. If your DR accepts BCBS (as an example) they are under contract for the various services to cost whatever the approved amount is. So let's say an X-Ray costs $1000.00 retail. Contract with BCBS says it's $650.00, so that is what is owed. They cover 50%, so that's $325.00 paid by BCBS, you pay the rest. However, they also saved you on the full rack rate charged by DR if you did not have insurance. I am overall healthy, but as I get older, I see the value in the coverage for simple peace of mind, and if you require even allergy sprays and what not, it does pay for it's self fairly quickly in simple drug discounts. For years I simply paid cash, and out of pocket for everything as I rarely had to go to the DR's. However, as I am getting older, you more a less have other considerations to think about. ![]() |

I'm on my wife's teacher insurance now(it's great). But before that, my philosophy was --- most pain goes away after a couple of weeks. If it doesn't go away after a couple of weeks, I don't want to know what it is.
