My cellphone (an old shitty flip phone) is dying and I have a free upgrade with the phone carrier. For $99 I can either get an iPhone 5 of the Samsung Galaxy S3. Just curious what peoples opinions are of these two phones.

in all seriousness the galaxy is a good phone, go for the s4 though, the iPhone is the iPhone. if you are a macophile you have no other choice. mobile app writers tell me the s4 is the better phone -
if the deal is for an s3, it sounds like the carrier is trying to screw you, that's an outdated device.Comment

invest a couple hundred bucks and get s4 instead...
if you get s3, in a year or 2, it will be close to worthless...
s4 on the other hand you will be able to sell on ebay for a few hundred bucks...
so with some luck, not only you will get a better device, but you could actually come out ahead compared to s3...

I just checked. It looks like the options for my upgrade are $99 for either the iPhone 5 of the Galaxy S3. If I want to pay $200 I can get the Galaxy S4.
It sounds like that might be $100 well spent. To be honest I have never had a Smartphone so anything I get will be better than what I have now, but I do want to make sure I get the best deal I can.Comment

get the s3 if you want to customize the ui and/or fart around with tweaks and mods and such, also if you want to pick your own music player and where you buy music.
the screen on the iphone is better, the ui is *slicker* but not by much. but you are locked into the apple experience.
if you are looking at the best deal strictly on price, it looks like the better money value on the deal is the iphone.Comment

You're going to have to be either unlocked or jailbroken on either format to do any of the real cool stuff.
But you're not locked into anything be being on a iPhone. I have never used iTunes and have no issue with doing anything on my phone.
And I was a DieHard Android user, still am to an extent.Comment

The wife and I picked up a pair of S4's a few weeks ago - for slightly under $100 each. Black's cameras (authorized Telus Mobility re-seller) had them on at $179 - but gave us two $50 gift coupons and $35 trade-in for each of our old Motorola Milestones.
Our old contract didn't expire until this September - but we wanted to lock in new 3yr contracts before the CRTC regulations kick in this fall.
Bottom line - we love the new S4's. Lightning fast with the quad core processors and LTE 4G network. 12mp camera is suh-weet, too.Comment

in head to head testing and reviews the Htc one trounces the Samsung
iphones are not even close to either the HTC or the Samsung
you'd probably be happy with either the HTC one or the S4, but people that have tried both overwhelmingly are preferring the HTC one.... google some of the reviews comparing the two head to head, the HTC is the best phone out there right now

the only thing ill miss is imessage which i use on the macbook and ipad... but damn it iphone and even the new IOS is truly disappointing at this point. FIRST, don't get the S3, its not the newest model, you will be full of regret and hatred to those who have the S4, even the water proof one!
This is a question that no one person can truthfully answer!
Why? because it comes down to your own personal preference. Its like asking which flavor of ice cream is best, or does one bottle of water better than another.
I've had BOTH android and iPhones and I prefer the iPhone hands down, but that is me. I like how simple and easy to use they are, plus everything on earth connects to them.
Android on the other hand I didn't like, it was almost going from a mac to a PC but running on some foreign language with some new OS that didn't do what I want.

A friend who had an iPhone 4 just got this S4 Active. He has only had it a few days and says he loves it. The thing he says he likes the most is that the actual phone part of it sounds better. He said calls on the iPhone always sounded a little muffled, but on the S4 they sound great.Comment

It is likely going to be a couple of weeks until I actually get the phone. I think my contract ends and my upgrade date is somewhere around the 15th. That said, I will likely end up either getting the HTC or the S4.
I am not an apple hater and know plenty of people that have them and love them, but I think I would rather have an android phone.
As I read the reviews of them it looks like both the G4 and HTC get great reviews so I will likely end up going into the store and looking at both of them and deciding which one I like the look and feel of better.Comment
