She left, got a firearm, and then returned. That's not standing your ground, that's leaving, arming yourself, then returning and confronting someone with a handgun. If all she did was fire a shot into the wall twenty years is freaking overkill.

Zimmerman couldn't use the stand your ground laws because this was a seventeen minute incident in which Zimmerman followed the victim.

Did George Zimmerman follow Trayvon Martin because he was black? I don't know. Maybe it was because he was the neighborhood watch guy, there had been robberies, and Trayvon was walking up in people's yards.

Young black guy with a hoodie on in that circumstance...yeah that does look suspicious. And it would have been just as suspicious if it had been a young white guy with tattoos and a shaved head. Or even a young Mexican guy (Latin gangs are getting really bad across the country)

I don't know what was in Zimmerman's mind. Neither do ANY of you.

And I would bet that if Richard's neighborhood had been burglarized repeatedly and he saw a young black guy walking up in people's yards at night in his neighborhood then he too would be suspicious. And if he saw a young white guy walking up in people's yards wearing a hoodie under those circumstances the same would hold true.

The race doesn't really matter.
There were burglaries. People get nervous and scared. Zimmerman shouldn't have tried to take it into his own hands...but that's what people do when they are frustrated and angry.

Trayvon shouldn't have decided to kick that "cracker" ass (even though Trayvon was so racist that he didn't even see that Zimmerman is NOT a "cracker"...he's Latin)

If you jump on somebody and start a fight...you MAY get your ass shot. It happens all the time, everyday. I've seen it happen many times in my life in the parking lot of bars.

A fight breaks out, a gun gets pulled, people get shot. No mystery there to me.

I don't think Zimmerman shot him because he was black. I believe Zimmerman would have shot me too if I started beating his ass.

Life experience teaches you things, and I've had a gun or two stuck in my face when I was a young man and luckily never got shot and I learned life lessons. Trayvon was one of the unlucky ones who decided to fight the wrong guy at the wrong time.

The whole thing is a nightmare.

And as I said earlier, the prosecution doesn't seem to have met the burden of "beyond a reasonable doubt".
But I'm not sure what the jury will do.

Al Sharpton and other black "leaders" (how has that been working out for the last 50 years?) will start riots if Zimmerman is freed.

So maybe the jury will join in and be intimidated by that thought and put him in jail.

If they find him not guilty...I feel sorry for everybody in Sanford and Orlando.

And the odd thing is: A Mexican shoots an African American...and it's white people's fault.

In all seriousness Richard, I don't think race has anything to do with this case. And also keep in mind that keeping racism alive is BIG business for some black leaders. It makes them millions of dollars a year and has made them and their families very, very rich.

I'm too lazy to research but I believe that race became a well publicized issue when the mother insisted her kid was shot for being black and the general assumption was that "Zimmerman" was a white guy, not hispanic. English isn't even his first language. She proabably also got this from listening to the call between her son and the girl he was talking to where he said he was being followed by a "creepy ass cracker". I believe the family was allowed to hear all the audio evidence 2-3 days after the shooting.

Media outlets should be punished as should individuals for inciting racial tensions in the media, in my opinion. News should not be a tool to inflame hatred for the sake of selling ad space.

I never really thought of this as a race issue. Isn't his apartment complex mostly black?

Back in the 1960's President Johnson declared "War On Poverty" (sound familiar..."war on drugs", "war on terror", etc.)

Since Pres. Johnson declared "War On Poverty" the U.S. govt. has spent 15 TRILLION dollars to eradicate poverty.

The result:
1969...2.8 million people in the U.S. on foodstamps
2013...47 million people in the U.S. on foodstamps
that's FORTY SEVEN MILLION or 44.2 million MORE people in poverty than when the "war" was still young.

When you put people in a position where they get a check and food stamps for doing nothing...they will continue to do nothing.

The policies that you would probably approve of (like the war on poverty) have made things WORSE by taking away the impetus for many people to have any ambition.

I moved here to Vegas from South Carolina. And I know dozens of people back in SC who got govt. checks and food stamps and went out of their way to NOT work to make money because it would stop their govt. check.

Even though they COULD have made a lot more money with a job...they would rather get the smaller govt. check.

The flea markets in South Carolina are full of folks working cash businesses so the govt. doesn't know that they are making a few hundred bucks in cash (not reporting it of course) on the side to go along with their govt. checks.

I admire that you think that all the "poor" people in the U.S. are honorable souls who have been "victimized" by society.

But after almost 50 years of us taxpayers putting out a total of 15 trillion dollars, the situation worsened.

I just want to be clear:
1. Yes, you are WHITE

2. Black people in the United States will not like you no matter how many times you try to tell them you are a Canadian. Matter of fact they will like you less.

3. I know and hang out with lots of black folks. They laugh at people with the ideas you are putting out (not talking about the "poor" black folks, I'm talking about strong successful black people who do NOT like to be thought of as "victims" all of their lives).

4. Blacks, Latinos, and Asians are many times MORE racist than white people.

5. Jews were in slavery for THOUSANDS of years. And after they were finally "free", they were persecuted and even killed in great numbers (the Holocaust).
Nobody gave them foodstamps or welfare checks.
The result: As a race, they are rich as fuck.

Maybe it's time that black and white people let go of the slavery issue (as I said, the Jews make the Blacks slavery history look like a walk in the park).

Nobody alive on this earth in 2013 in the United States was ever a slave or a slave owner.

But some black "leaders" are in the business of racial strife. If you can't see that...I can't help you to understand how it works in the U.S.

This trial has nothing to do with racism except by the parties chiming in outside of the case.
The closest you can get to GZ's state of mind is when he muttered "fuckin' punks" and said "these assholes always get away." This is the window into the kind of person he thought he was following.. a fucking punk asshole who he didn't want to get away. He clearly bore ill will towards him, and that is the states reasoning for going for murder 2, although I still feel manslaughter is more appropriate.

I have a friend of mine who is black. In fact, I'm his son's Godfather.

He grew up in complete poverty in the ghetto. No father, mother worked all the time, he worked, took care of his sisters, kept out of trouble, and did great in high school - ended up getting a scholarship to Notre Dame. He got a degree in architecture, worked as an architect, and eventually opened his own architecture firm.

He tells me that all of his friends growing up... Are criminals or have crappy low paying jobs. The only difference is motivation on his part.
