I wouldn't say that no one ever gets credit for raising someone else's kids.

I'd say the biggest issue someone without kids of their own, in this type of situation, would be getting used to playing second fiddle. Her/His kids will always come first. I felt this as a single guy in a relationship with a girl who had kids. But now as a father of 3 myself, I "get it".

My father died when I was a baby, and my mother remarried. My step father raised me from when I was a young child and I didn't really know he was my step father until I was much older.

The woman I dated before my wife had a child, and I loved playing daddy. I didn't have any issues raising someone else's kid. It's very noble.

I did. They were very young when she and I got together, and I pretty much raised them.
The REAL question, in my case should have been..."Should I watch out for her possible infidelity?" and sure enough, after about 5 years, she was cheating on me, we broke up, and the ones that had the WORST of it...were her 2 kids (she and I didn't have any together).
They were the ones who lost the most, emotionally, in that deal.
Financially...well, that was me...but, that's off topic.

Also, it depends on the situation. Is the dad long gone? Is he still up in your girl's grill all of the time? Does he pay his support and involve himself in the kid's lives?

These are all factors that you need to consider and figure out where you stand, your self esteem, etc.

Like any other loving relationship, "when it's right, it's right..." There is no explaining it. Love will catch you when you least expect it, when you aren't looking for it. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Aside from the financial aspect, it's hard enough to raise a kid with just 2 people having to agree on how to handle things ... when there's a 3rd person who has a say in it, you know you'll frequently just get the "it's not your kid so shut up" reply from the father (and the mom will take his side).
