    Who's got a garden this year ?

Just put mine in today, better late than never, been miserable around here, too much rain of late. But I love tomatoes and other veggies fresh from the source, so here we go again, for another round with the weeds

My gardener planted a flower garden in both the front and backyard. All kinds of colorful flowers, but no fruits or vegetables.

Lots of spinach, tomatoes, radish, lettuce, zucchini, peas, some broccoli too. I grow it for the leaves and the florets. Did you know the leaves have 3 times the vitamin A of the florets? Good stuff. Radish leaves are good too, kind of a peppery / mint sort of flavor.

Ripped mine out last week to relocate the beds. Fell behind this year putting in a chicken coop and re-doing some fence lines. If I get time next week, I might put in a bed for cucumbers and greens etc. but I'm too late for tomatoes and peppers. Planning an asparagus bed for next year (won't produce until the year after though)

Yep there is some beer out, aswell as cornmeal. But I´ve got 12 raised beds, so they find a way in somewhere. Also the beans are in a drystone walled area, so that gets full of snails hiding in the wall.

tried coffee aswell but that doesnt seems to work.. I´m not talking normal slugs, these are thr Spanish slug.. fuckers are massive. They are 5 inches long.

The other problem with the beer is I have to pick it up everyday, otherwise the chickens try to get the slugs out..

I have shitload of strawberries, currants, gooseberries, a grapevine and an appletree.
then a wide variety of herbs.

..and the usual suspects, carrots, beets, potatoes, lettuce, cucumber, zucchini, chili & tomatoes.

I like home grown stuff even though it's not worth the money/hassle if you calculate the costs and time spent on it. So much easier to just buy some genetically manipulated juicy tomatoes.
                                      ..and I'm off.

Time yep, but cost? I got 40kilos of tomatoes lastyear for a plant cost of 3 euros.
Peppers I got as plug plants this year, 50 for 4 euros.
eggplants are 50c a plant, and you get around 10 off there.

Everything else I grow from seed, spent 20 euros lastyear, and they´ve done me for this year again.

Makes me get out in the garden for an hour everyday, get a bit of fresh air, working from home you can easily sit in front of the computer all day.

Winter planting saves alot of $. Broccoli, Cabbage, Kale, Salad Greens, Carrots, Parsnips.
Got a fennel crop started just put in seeds today, for a October/November crop, stops them going to seed and not bulbing up if you start now.

1200 tomato plants in the greenhouse should yield approx 30 tonnes of tomato this year, in the field I have hot peppers, they are a huge gamble every year, the price fluctuates like crazy and if my gamble pays off and the price stays high during the summer I'm looking at serious cash...

did watermelons last year and broke even, it was my first field plant ever and I was very happy with the results, next year I get my government grant and have 20 hectares at my disposal with top notch irrigation (israeli drippers) and only 10 miles from the border...will try watermelons and honeymelons, in a hot year they are pure gold...

commercial veggies and fruit is a side pet project but I really enjoy it like nothing else...this year I am getting genetically modified bees that will naturally germinate my tomato flowers inside the greenhouse, they are made in holland and are breed to be big and heavy and pollination is an incredible 99.9%...fucking cant wait :D

We have some corn and had some Pepper plants but they got trampled in a window install. So no peppers but the corn made it.

Just curious. For Tomatoes, do you opt for more stable hybrids, or do you do any heirloom/specialty varieties, since they are greenhouse grown? It's amazing how much the price of produce has jumped in the last year. Good luck on your pet project though. I thought I over-planted one year with 20 tomato plants. Couldn't imagine 1200.

i don't have much of a yard so i only planted a few tomato plants but its better than nothing. my parents have or had a great garden. grew all sorts of stuff but i don't live near them anymore so i can't help them out with it and they're getting on in years so they only grow a few things now. strawberries, tomatoes, beans, potatoes. they always make sure to save some strawberries for me. you just can't buy strawberries like them in stores. they're all gmo frankenberries.
you don't know you're wearing a leash if you sit by the peg all day..
