I don't trust anyone... specially animals (including humans).

I'm always vigilant.

I have had 2 my oldest just passed away a few weeks ago. He was 17 years old. They are amazing if you dont treat them like shit. I would never own another breed.

John-ACWM 06-09-2013 09:54 AM

Tough breed indeed, not for the regular dog lover.

Pits are as American as apple pie...

I wonder how many of those kids on Little Rascals got mauled to death while shooting show episodes?

I agree with your first point, though, but I still wouldn't own such an overall dumb breed.

What makes you think Pit bulls are so dumb? They actually score quite high 83% - 85% on temperament tests http://www.atts.org. That's higher than average. Just out of curiosity, and not to single you out or anything, but how much time have you actually spent with Pit bulls? I suspect that 99.9% of the negative and false comments about Pits come from people who've never even spent time with them. It's easy to simply write off an entire breed like they are all the same. It's hard to actually make the effort and get yourself out there and actually get to know the breed.

I just think that's about the ugliest creature anyway. :Oh crap

Also, if they're really smart it only means they know what they're doing when they go apeshit on their former owners turned victims.. terrifying.

My father owned 5 total growing up as a kid & I was around them often with his friends dogs being pits mostly also. They were fairly well bred pits, but this was during the '90s. My brother breeds them now once in a while. I am probably around a decent pit for 2-3 hours once per week. I've met two out of the hundreds that I've been impressed with as far as intelligence goes(& that was in comparison to other pits). The ones I interact with often are loving & playful & all that, but I wouldn't say anything even remotely close to "intelligent". Your reaction was typical, though, of most amateur pit owners I've met. I have nothing against the breed at all - they're just dumb. So are many other breeds & I also wouldn't own them for that very reason. A well behaved pit is probably great for therapy & such, because they can be incredibly loving and playful.. but I don't want that & that also doesn't suggest anything about their intelligence.

When comparing them to the dogs I'm around very often that are being trained to be sent to the border patrol, royalty/rich for estate protection, etc., they're dumb. The two I own as well, but whatever. I had this "discussion" with a local who thought his pit was "oh so smart" and him and his dog got laughed away from our ScH club because the dog was very dumb & couldn't do ANYTHING as soon as any amount of stress was applied. He thought he was going to show me up, but now he admits that pits may be smart for the typical sit, roll over, play dead crap, but that's about it. If your dog can follow a scent of meth & find it buried 2 feet underground 3 miles away in the middle of the woods, I'll shut up. Temperament has absolutely nothing to do with intelligence, so I'm unsure why you brought that up at all.

Temperament has absolutely nothing to do with intelligence, so I'm unsure why you brought that up at all.

A dog from no matter which breed is only as smart as they are trained. That holds true for Border Collies and Golden Retrievers. Those two breeds rank at the top for dog intelligence, and Border Collies in particular are capable of learning around 350 cues as compared to most dog breeds which are capable of around 200. But if that dog is never taught anything, where is the intelligence? It is the same for any breed.

Never assume. I've never owned a Pit bull. I put myself out there and actually went to see first hand what these Pit bulls are really like. I volunteered my time at an animal shelter.

I never said that temperament and intelligence were the same thing. I do think that if they do well on a temperament test (if done by a competent tester) that they will do well with working with a trainer. I wasn't implying that their propensity to learn is some how as good as a Golden Retriever. Since Pits aren't an official breed, they haven't been measured for intelligence like Border Collies and Labradors have.

What is true is that Pit bulls do excel in sports such as canine obedience competitions and agility. And as you already know they work well with drug enforcement and search and rescue. It's not fair to base the intelligence on all Pits just based on the word or observation of one to three people. I look at the bigger picture and research the data coming from well educated canine professionals.

Dinner
Toilet
Out
Yard
House

Without ours going apeshit crazy thinking they're going out somewhere with us.

Why Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) Doesn't Work.
