Secret Police hidden cameras all over L.A.

Big brother is ALWAYS watching you ... and taking pictures ... just ask Soulja Boy, whose red Bentley was impounded by the LAPD thanks to incriminating photos taken by a secret network of police cameras stationed around L.A., TMZ has learned.

Our story begins on January 9, when a motorcyclist T-boned a red Bentley in Hollywood ... leaving the biker seriously injured ... but the driver of the Bentley -- who caused the crash by making a reckless turn -- fled the scene.

We're told a witness -- the victim's friend -- was so pissed off, he went back to the scene of the crime a few days later and nosed around, asking people if they knew who was driving the red Bentley. He struck gold at Roscoe's House of Chicken and Waffles ... when a valet told the guy he knew the car well ... it belonged to Soulja Boy, who frequented the area.

The witness went to police with the info ... and that's when things got Orwellian.

Turns out, the cops have access to a super-database of photographs taken by thousands of hidden cameras stationed on police cars, buildings and private vehicles all over L.A.. There are private companies that make money off the City by getting citizens and businesses to mount cameras for the database.

One law enforcement source tells us the cameras are constantly taking photos of cars all over the city -- and the average car is shot AT LEAST 1,000 TIMES PER DAY!!!

So ... the cops got the license plate number of Soulja Boy's Bentley, ran it through the database and BINGO ... a bunch of photos popped up showing the Bentley with damage that corresponded to the accident.

Soulja's Bentley is currently damage-free. Law enforcement sources tell us the operating theory is that the rapper had the car repaired on the sly to cover up incriminating evidence.

So cops got a search warrant and a judge agreed there was probable cause to believe the Bentley was involved in the accident, so cops went and impounded the car.

You're probably as shocked as we are about the cameras ... cops tell us they solve hundreds of crimes with these secret photographs. So even if you're a law abiding citizen, you probably still pick your nose, so heads up.

Stop kidding yourself.
Cops are following the guy and taking the pics by hand for a long time with no
real cause; and they can do that because it's so easy to tell you this bullshit.

U can tell if a car has been repaired or repainted by testing the thickness of the paint with a paint thickness meter. Pretty simple and straight forward if you ask me!

they don't have that tech *yet* but as of this past monday they are getting sued by the aclu for license plate scanner tech

Quote:
The LAPD, the L.A. County Sheriff's Department and other law enforcement agencies in Southern California routinely scan millions of license plates via patrol-car-based devices that can track your whereabouts.
What do they do with the info? It's not entirely clear, but the record shows that cops have used such stored data to help piece together cases. Good right? Well, the American Civil Liberties Union wants to know more about the plate scanners that have been almost ubiquitous in SoCal:

The ACLU and the Electronic Frontier Foundation today announced the groups have jointly filed suit against the LAPD and the sheriff's department for allegedly failing to provide requested data under the California Public Records Act.

well, it appears it is the same tech, meybe exaggerated:::::::

When the bike rider went to the cops with information, it was allegedly revealed that the police could identify the damaged Bentley's driver using a network of THOUSANDS of HIDDEN cameras that are located in cop cars, civillian vehicles, and buildings ALL OVER Los Angeles!
Apparently, this Big Brother network — which is set up by private companies — photographs each individual car in LA 1000 times per day ON AVERAGE and helps police solves hundreds of crimes!

Someone doesn't watch too much TV. All of these crime dramas... That's the first thing they check is all of the cameras in the area.

Even my little hometown here has cameras on their cars. Better yet they have license plate readers. These scanners constantly scan for license plates, and when it finds one scans it and automatically pops it up on their computer screen... It quickly high lights people who don't have their registration up to date, have problems with their DL, or even if they don't have insurance.

Big brother has been watching us for some time now. We just haven't been paying attention.

i think it's different tech, i was busted back in the 1980s in houston with a squad car behind me running my license plate.

Using a vast and automatic electronic tracking system that is all but unknown to the California public, on the day of Robles' murder, police in Los Angeles County cities had made a detailed record of the alleged getaway vehicle's movements.

The information came complete with GPS coordinates — even photographs.

In a situation evoking the hit movie Minority Report, the suspects were being watched even before they were considered suspects.

L.A. Weekly has learned that more than two dozen law enforcement agencies in Los Angeles County are using hundreds of these "automatic license plate recognition" devices (LPRs) — units about the size of a paperback book, usually mounted atop police cruisers — to devour data on every car that catches their electronic eye.

he L.A. County Sheriff's Department and the Los Angeles Police Department are two of the biggest gatherers of automatic license plate recognition information. Local police agencies have logged more than 160 million data points — a massive database of the movements of millions of drivers in Southern California.

Each data point represents a car and its exact whereabouts at a given time. Police have already conducted, on average, some 22 scans for every one of the 7,014,131 vehicles registered in L.A. County. Because it's random, some cars are scanned numerous times, others never.

Haha, I use them when I details cars as well. You dont want to apply a heavy grit compound to a car with a thin clearcoat!

speaking of automobiles, i was reading earlier this morning that, according to published statistics, the american car culture has peaked, almost 10% of americans in driving age no longer own cars, car sales peaked at some point before the recession, then add in the recession and manufacturers don't expect to return to 17 million cars sold a year here.

LOS ANGELES ? LOS ANGELES (AP) - Los Angeles police should have access to the city's real-time traffic cameras following the Boston Marathon bombings, where surveillance footage proved vital to the manhunt for suspects, a councilman said Wednesday.

In a motion, Mitchell Englander has asked police and transportation officials to look into how compatible the current systems are and how they may be integrated.

"With the rapid capture of the Boston bombing suspects by the FBI using digital imagery and closed circuit video surveillance, the need for an integrated and effective system accessible to Los Angeles city law enforcement has never been greater," Englander said.

The motion calls for access to 460 traffic cameras that are being used by transportation officials to be shared with police to help catch suspected criminals and patrol communities.

The cameras are located at traffic signals throughout the city and are used to track the movement of traffic.

Police increasingly rely on camera technology, using their own surveillance cameras in high-crime areas and devices like automatic license-plate-recognition systems that use small cameras on patrol cars to scan license plates for stolen vehicles, Englander said.

Earlier this week, San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr said he wants more cameras along Market Street to give police extra eyes during major events.

In the past, the thoroughfare has hosted well-attended parades, including celebrations of the San Francisco Giants' World Series Victories, Chinese New Year and gay pride.
