Actors live for national commercials, most struggling actors depend on getting one or two a year to keep their dream alive. National commercial i think pays about 35-50,000 range.
Actually better pay than getting a medium sized role in a major movie which might only pay 10-20 grand.

and i was the poor fool who lost the part for a National commercial for Tetley Tea

seems everyone loved me but the client didn't think the consumers would believe a white guy could dance and drink tea at the same time

What kind of car?

Red Porsche, 944. Nothing special - it wasn't exactly a big budget flick and they saw it out there :)

My uncle was a commercial director in CA back in the 70's and my aunt and uncle's house was in a lot of commercials. And my aunt developed the first software program in the early 70's that paid actors and actresses (before then it was done by hand) in movies, TV shows and commercials. Again - I merely brush up against greatness, lol! :winkwink:

That's why I shop at walmart any time I can. I always go the extra mile to support non-union companies whenever possible.

I watched these people knowing full well that their 15 minutes of fame would more than likely be a regional ad and possibly a national ad for someone like Colgate and that's it.

The money can be good, I've had friends live for years off of residuals from 1 ad. One good friend of mine got paid $30k a year just so they could use her 5 second spot where she eats some yoplait yogurt and smiles...LOL

But spots like that are few and far between.

Yeah a couple of friends of mine do the commercial gig, and do pretty good with it at that, but that's not my thing. I'm not commercial material, so I don't try for them. Where I live at right now is definitely a commercial market so I'll be leaving within a year to greener pastures.

The great thing about being in an Internet business is I have a lot more free time then other people trying to do acting as a career, and I can live pretty much anywhere as long as there's a connection. I'm also far from starving so I'm not so desperate for parts... makes it a little easier to relax when auditioning. :thumbsup

My friend Jenie (http://www.jensex.com)'s boyfriend is an actor, and sometimes an extra. She has done some extra work, too, mostly for TV. She's so into hollywood, it makes readingher journal quite fun.

I am the white guy in the front row in 'The Kings of Comedy" movie. It's just a comedy show with all black dudes. It was pretty funny... but I was one of two white guys in the whole place.

They put the camera on me a couple times while they were talking shit about white people.

sextoyking 02-26-2003 03:18 AM

well I have moviestars.net if that counts :))

phogirl69 02-26-2003 03:50 AM

Where do you apply to be an extra in a movie???? I would love to be an extra

shermo 02-26-2003 04:27 AM

I've done extra work in Play It To The Bone with Woody Harrelson and Antonio, in Rush Hour 2, and I was a Stand In in Oceans 11.

it's good to live in Vegas! :thumbsup

Does Cable Access count? A band I was in, used to be 'the band' for a local entertainment show, lol.

phogirl69 02-26-2003 05:50 AM

Where do you apply? What newspapers do they advertise these jobs in? I looked in the Register and didn't see anything :helpme

Zoe_Zoebaboe 02-26-2003 07:57 AM

They needed "middle school looking kids"

Take off my makeup and the boots, add a plaid shirt and jeans, I was pimping hte backpack :)

dantheman 02-26-2003 08:11 AM

back in 90/91 I produced local tv spots and was in several of them, was pretty fun.
one of my best friends as been trying for years to break into the movie business, he's been extra, stage crew, jobbers etc.....but last time I talked to him (he lives in LA) he was still doing contruction work waiting on his next "break"
I wish him the best :glugglug

I was at WWE Smackdown last night in London. Watch it this Thursday on TV and maybe you'll see me in the crowd. I'll be the one sitting down yawning with the "I just paid $9 for a beer and they won't let me take it into the stands" look on my face.

I'll be sitting beside my friend with the "I just paid $42 for this ticket and the Rock and Hulk Hogan didn't even show up" look on his face.

P.S. Wrestling looks even worse in real life than it does on TV. Hard to believe.

Was on the Bozo show when I was about 12. Played the game where you toss ping-pong balls into the litle buckets. Won a bunch of toys.

Lived in Ft. Lauderdale and was walking home from work one day and got stuck at an intersection where they were filming an episode of Miami Vice (don't know why it wasn't in Miami). I'm standing on the corner when Crocket's Spyder goes by. I was wearing a bright orange shirt so I was easy to spot. Was surprised they didn't have the shot cleared of people.

I'm on the beach during the opening shot in Revenge of the Nerds 2. The movie was shot in Ft. Lauderdale and the theater I worked at had the World Premier. Got to meet most of the cast. Had to dress up like a nerd for the premier. I already thought the theater uniform accomplished that look pretty well.

Jak 02-26-2003 10:50 AM

Seeing the shot of WWF reminded me that I was in the crowd when they filmed Billy Idol's "Mony Mony" video. :thumbsup

el_greco 02-26-2003 10:58 AM

I was an extra on Full House once. Some friends and I were asked to Greek dance in a scene. Cool experience.

I also did a Sprint long-distance commercial. I was Greek dancing in the back.

Emerson Style 02-26-2003 11:19 AM

Since I live near Hollywood, I've had the opportunity to appear as an extra in several TV shows and films. It's kind of fun, but long hours for low pay. Of course, I've appeared in a few XXX videos as well...

Yes, I filmed about a dozen TV shows in Japan.

JustJen 02-26-2003 11:48 AM

I have been a superstar in my own mind for about 10 years now.... Does that count?

Rose Crans 03-17-2003 12:51 AM

To be an extra just get a LA411 or NY411 and start calling the extras casting places.

I've been in a bunch of movies where they used crew to fill in gaps in extras and day players.

The last movie I worked on was SAG low budget modified agreement and the big stars in it (you've heard of them) got paid less than their stand ins who were Union. How that happened, I'll never know.
