2 men try to break into occupied cop car
These two suspects have won today's "Dumb Criminal" award. They have been accused of trying to steal a police car -- while the officers were in it!
Tempe Police have arrested Paul Gardener and Chad Leakey on burglary charges.
Investigators say they tried to break into an unmarked police car through the back seat, not realizing two uniformed officers were sitting in the front seats.
Both tried to run from the scene, but were quickly arrested.
Police say the suspects were linked to one other vehicle burglary and two attempted vehicle burglaries. They add that Gardener had a small bag of methamphetamine on his person, and Leakey had stolen mail in his backpack.
They were booked into the Maricopa County Jail for burglary and attempted burglary. Gardener is facing a drug possession charge.
As for the mail theft, the U.S. Postal Service is investigating.
