    Actress Angelina Jolie announced in a New York Times op-ed article on Tuesday that she underwent a preventive double mastectomy after learning she carries the BRCA1 gene, which sharply increases her risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer.

                                                      I find this weird. From a person who has seen women on my mothers side of the family fight and in 1 case die from breast cancer, I can understand why she would be concerned about it.

                                                      On the other hand, having this done as a preemptive surgery seems drastic. Early detection is key in fighting and beating any cancer. I don't see why she couldn't have increased her Dr's check-ups instead. Removing both breasts without being actually diagnosed with cancer is excessive in my opinion.

                                                                              If anything, since her mother died of ovarian cancer and she has a high genetic risk, why didn't she get her ovaries removed? Maybe she wants to have more children, but she could have stored eggs and used a surrogate. Ovarian cancer is very difficult to detect, especially in the early stages. Opting for a mastectomy instead seems extreme, especially when frequent, specific screenings can catch this form of cancer at an early stage.

                                                                                                                                                          Its about taken away the risk of having breast cancer and not knowing before it spreads to the lymph nodes which then can spread to other parts of the body. A lot of woman have it done because its like waiting for that scan that says "you have cancer" Woman who are high risk have to have yearly or sometimes even 3 monthly scans, so can you imagine every time you go for a scan you have that one constant thought "Have I got it this time or not"
