    New cars that don't sell

i was wondering yesterday, what do they do with cars that aren't sold at the dealership? i'm sure they get to the last possible day and have a crazy deal on them, but at a certain point the new models are in. are they returned to the manufacturer? auction? if returned what do they do at that point with them?

They have a sale and get a herd of idiots to show up and buy last years model at a "big discount" where the poor dealership only makes a couple of grand (sometimes)

Years ago I went into the local Mazda dealership to buy something for my RX7 and they had a purple MX3 for sale. This was like 1992 or so. It was brand new, two years old, and because it was freaking purple they couldn't sell it. They were selling it at a huge discount just to get rid of it.

This was my first new car. It had a CD, sunroof, leather seats, and the V6 was just perky enough.

I traded it in a year later on my first Mustang, and they gave me like $5k more than I had paid for it.... First and only time I ever made money on car.

Didya like your RX7? I considered an RX8 but didn't want to deal with the rotary engine because I heard so much about high oil consumption, really sucky mpg, and generally poor reliability and high repair bills.

But did you like your 7?

At the time I loved it. I thought it was sport and peppy, had a sun roof... It was a 2nd gen RX7. That was a long time ago...

They sell them at a very heavily discounted rate. Most of the time the manufacturer will put out special deals at the end of life of a car year in order to sell them. It doesn't happen all that often that a dealership is stuck with these cars.
