    Classic Rock Fun...

So a month ago I went and saw The Eagles at The MGM Grand.

I have great seats for The Rolling Stones on May 11th at The MGM Grand

Got tickets to see Billy Idol at The Pearl Theater in The Palms on May 25th

And just now I picked up some tickets to see The Monkees on August 10th

I'm gonna need to go see a live band from this millennium sometime this year. lol

Not sure that I would go to see Billy Idol but I've seen the other three more than once!

Monkees without Davy Jones - not so sure. Saw Billy Idol at the Palladium during the Rebel Yell Tour, like 1983-4, awesome show - his axman, Steve Stevens, was a great guitarist - not sure if he's still around.

For some reason, your post suddenly made me think of an old SF-based rock-blues supergroup appropriately named The Dinosaurs:

Dinosaurs Musicians: John Cipollina - guitar, vocals - Quicksilver Messenger Service, Barry Melton - guitar, vocals - Country Joe and the Fish, Peter Albin - bass, vocals - Big Brother and the Holding Company, Spencer Dryden - drums - Jefferson Airplane, Merl Saunders - keyboards, vocals - Saunders/Garcia (as in Jerry Garcia) Band!
BTW, did you see 65-year old Bob Weir collapse onstage last week:

Scary stuff, but he kept on playing...

Unfortunately, the next show that I'm going to (next week), the Bottle Rock Festival in Napa (wine country), Furthur just pulled out of due to Weir's condition:

Saw Billy Idol a couple of years ago. And yes, Steve Stevens is still with him...only he's about a hundred times BETTER than he was in 1984!!!

I mean, he is jaw-dropping good. At one point he grabbed up an acoustic and played some of the most intricate and complex stuff and blew my mind. A lot of guitar players can play "fast" with a lot of distortion and sustain so that their picking hand isn't really doing anything. But Stevens was picking clean on that acoustic solo he did and his dexterity and precision were just amazing.
And Billy Idol himself sang his ass off. It was a good show and I'm looking forward to seeing them again.

Sounds like a busy schedule, haven't had the chance to see any of the mentioned although noticed Joe Walsh as someone's guest playing around here recently. Got to know him through his antics at Expo Sevilla guitar heroes night way back in 92 (on VHS).

Reminds me I should check the Stones movie from Martin Scorsese.

i just googled Steve Stevens - he's kept himself busy over the years, including over 30 with Billy Idol. Here's a little something different by Steve Stevens:

Juno Reactor, in all of it's incarnations is a great band/thing.

Steve Stevens is a guitarist's guitarist (doing a cover of Hendrix's Voodoo Child here):

My concert schedule is starting to get busy enough that I decided today that I had to draw up a calender to make sure I don't double book myself.

In the last week and a bit I saw Green Day and Franz Ferdinand but there is a bit of a gap now until the summer and autumn though I am sure that will change.

                                  Coming up I have

                                  Fleetwood Mac - July
                                  Depeche Mode - September
Depeche Mode - October (yup, twice)
                                  Atoms for Peace - October

I think tomorrow I will be booking Pet Shop Boys tickets. I heard the new song today and liked it enough. The previous album wasn't very good.

This year is shaping up to be a really strong year for albums which I am hoping means good tours too.

Nope, Nesmith is back. He rejoined last year and toured with them for the first time since 1970.

Well...if you think back, Davy Jones kinda just sang the sweet love songs. Mickey Dolenz was the main front guy (even though he was always behind the drum kit on the t.v. show) and sang all the other hits ("I'm A Believer", "Pleasant Valley Sunday", "Last Train To Clarksville", "Stepping Stone" , etc.)

Guess I should rent the movie "Head" with The Monkees before I go to the show.

Saw them in 2006 in Atlanta....and then saw them last year when they did a residency for a month at The Hard Rock here in Vegas.

When you go see them, just enjoy the moment of seeing them all together...because they don't sound good at all.

Vocals are just terrible. And the musicianship (except for Tommy Lee's drumming) is sad. At one point they did an "acoustic" set of three songs. God it was horrible. Out of tune, out of time, and singing in the wrong key.

And Mick Mars is pretty bad off physically. They had to help him walk on and off the stage and his playing was horrendous.

Having said all that...just try to enjoy the show as a spectacle more than anything else. I'm a Crue fan so that's what I did in the end.
I put them about one rung up the ladder over KISS in 2011 (which was atrociously bad...guys dressed like Peter Criss and Ace Frehley, and the thinnest wimpiest mix I've ever heard from a rock band).

Stevens sounding just like Eddie Van Halen here:

I have great seats for The Rolling Stones on May 11th at The MGM Grand

Got tickets to see Billy Idol at The Pearl Theater in The Palms on May 25th

And just now I picked up some tickets to see The Monkees on August 10th

I'm gonna need to go see a live band from this millennium sometime this year. lol
                                                  Great line up!

I saw The Eagles in Bangkok in 2011. They are hands down my favorite group of all time, so I was on cloud nine. I've never heard anyone play and sing live as flawless as them.

Roger Waters is on tour doing The Wall (at least I think he still is). I want to see that and then I'll be content if I never see another concert.

That's cool. I'd probably go then too.

Head is such a messed up movie..lol.

His voice was very raspy, couldn't get a higher pitch and had a bit different tone/ color.

Mick Jagger will turn 70 in July. He sang, danced, ran, jumped and performed for 3 straight hours in Las Vegas on Sat. May 11, 2013.

I've seen the Stones on every tour since 1978...and each time I see them they sound a little better. This year was no different.

72 year old drummer Charlie Watts has never sounded better or more powerful. As I said earlier, Mick Jagger was a force of nature...and I've never heard him sing live as well as he did last night. Many times in the past he would be up there howling and yelping and sounding like shit.

Last night he SANG his ass off.

And Keith Richards was freakin' phenomenal. At every tour I've seen the Stones play, it seemed like Ron Wood always played most of the leads.

Not last night. "Keef" played what seemed like 80% of the leads. And he was using all of his famous tunings and with the capo and everything (watching how to REALLY play Jumping Jack Flash with open tuning and a capo on the 4th fret was amazing....completely different sound than the "cheat" way that all of us guitarists have played that song in standard tuning)

And his guitar tone was the best I've ever heard at any concert...period. When he played "Tumbling Dice" the combination of his telecaster, open tuning, amp tone and his HANDS was probably the closest to guitar tone heaven I've ever heard. Plenty of warm distortion with absolutely NO hint of "fizziness" in the tone. I was drooling.
It was LOUD and had the most warm "woody" tone I've ever heard (even more so than Joe Walsh's tone when I saw the Eagles a month or so back).

His playing was superb. When he ran (yes a 70 year old Keith Richards was running and jumping around onstage) to the front of the stage and played the opening rhythm guitar part to "All Down The Line" it was just nothing short of jaw dropping. Just NO way to get that in standard tuning.

Speaking of alt tunings...When Keith sang "Before They Make Me Run", he and Ron Wood played that strange lead break note for note together. I never knew how they did it on the record, but I saw it last night.
Ron was in open "E" tuning and Keith was in open "G" and they each played these little triads together in a bizarre harmony guitar part that sounded like one huge guitar.
                                                                                Just pure genius.

Mick Taylor came out and played on "Midnight Rambler". His excellent guitar work alongside Mick's harmonica playing really, really lit that song up. And Mick Jagger turned on the turbo chargers for "Rambler"...he kicked up the energy onstage so high that I was getting exhausted just watching him.
That song still evokes almost pure "evil" and watching Mick Jagger stalk the stage singing: "I'm called the hit and run raper in anger" sent chills up my spine.

Katy Perry made an appearance and dueted with Jagger on "Beast Of Burden" She's really thickened up and is sporting a nice big ass on her these days. She looked hot and surprisingly did a good job.

The Stones encored by bringing out a local high school choir and performing "You Can't Always Get What You Want" note for note off the album.

Then it was "Jumping Jack Flash"

And finally they brought Mick Taylor back out and ended the show with "Satisfaction".
And in a very nice touch...they had Mick Taylor take the final "band bow" which is only reserved for the actual members of The Rolling Stones (Taylor was a member from 1969 to 1974)

This was a great show. And as I look around the musical landscape I don't see any act out there that can touch what The Rolling Stones did last night. They don't need a bunch of choreographed dancers and lip synching...all they needed was their own talent, their own GREAT songs, and Mick Jagger with more energy than a 20 year old.

As I said, I've seen them on every tour since 1978...they get better every time.
Who knows...maybe next tour these lads will finally get it perfected. lol

Seen them 3 times here in Toronto. I'm not going to the show here next week though so guess maybe they've improved? Seen them in 93, 2003, and 2006 I think. Absolute shit. I go to a ton of concerts but the Stones are way over rated live.

Seen them 3 times here in Toronto. I'm not going to the show here next week though so guess maybe they've improved? Seen them in 93, 2003, and 2006 I think. Absolute shit. I go to a ton of concerts but the Stones are way over rated live.
I heard ticket sales tanked. No one wants to pay the $800 bucks - so they slashed the prices.

Dear Mick - the Leafs are in the play-offs. Torontonians are paying for hockey. Best of luck with ticket sales.
