Lita Ford and Nancy Wilson. There were whole rocker chick bands like Vixen too. They had one hit anyway.

Very incomplete list. You left out Patti Smith, Blondie, Joan Jett to name a few.

From what you have though, it's a toss up between Grace Slick and Janis.

well, in that case Stevie Nicks isn't rock either. And let's face it, Debbie was 10x the rocker Stevie Nicks and Grace Slick were.

To me, rock is an attitude rather than a music style, and other than Janis, all of them were "cheesy rock" or AOR, at least at some point of their careers. For example, The Runaways were real rockers. Joan Jett and Lita Ford were cheesy AOR. Just my humble opinion, of course. That's why I'd take Patti, Debbie, Siouxsie (and you can add Mo Tucker, Wendy O, Exene Cervenka and someone I forgot: Chrissie Hynde!): sheer attitude, less posse, breaking stereotypes and being themselves rather than a marketing developed image. Under this light, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez and Kate Bush were more "rocker" than, say, Pat Benatar

Anyway, it's pretty surprising there are so few chicks in rock from those years, I really thought there were more.

PS: And I'll add a little known band from early 70s that was amazing: Fanny. And 2 "noobs": Kim Gordon and Kim Deal

Thread wouldn't be complete without mentioning a few great Canadian rocker chicks...Lee Aaron, Headpins (Darby Mills) and Toronto (Holly Woods).

Saw Headpins and Toronto several times at Tony's Rock 'n Roll East (in Toronto) back in the day.

Bah. Close my eyes forever is about as classic as rock gets.

I've seen her perform in person, I think you must have her confused with someone else. Debbie Harry was more pop than anything, I don't see you arguing that one though.

Right, but this is about prominent classic rock chicks. Vixen was a barely-known cheesy 80s pop-metal group. Lita would have fit right in Vixen.

Blondie was punk / new wave, and actually I did reply to another poster who mentioned Debbie. We'll have to agree to disagree on "Close My Eyes Forever."

I always thought Lita was a T&A cheese queen who made completely forgettable pop metal. Not classic rock.

Yeah, I didn't want to make the list too long. I did consider Patti, Debbie & Joan. I like all three, but Patti & Debbie were punk. I probably should have included Joan.

Yeah. Didya see the movie that came out a few years back? Dakota Fanning (looking smoking hot as Cherie) and Kristen Stuart. It was ok. It was basically a vanity project for Joan. Some good music in it. Worth seeing if you liked the band.

She's listed on every rock site I've ever seen her on as hard rock and metal.

I have no idea what "cheese metal" is. Whatever it is it certainly isn't her though. She got her start in the same band as Joan Jett back in the 70's. They parted ways because Jett wanted to go with a slightly more punk sound and Ford wanted to continue in the hard rock vein, which she did...

Sorry but yes, she deserves at least a mention in this thread. Which she got. Nowhere did anyone suggest her as #1, or even top 5.

'cheese metal', sorry, had to laugh.

Ahh I see the stick in your craw, you simply don't like that song which was her biggest hit by the way. I guess there's no accounting for taste, but I can agree to your 'agree to disagree' thing. But anyone who's actually listened to more of her stuff than just the songs that made the radio knows she's anything but pop, and anything but cheesy, or a sellout, or anything of that nature. There's a ton of her live performances on youtube, you might want to give it a look, especially if you're going to set yourself up as an authority on what constitutes rock and what doesn't.

I always thought Lita was a T&A cheese queen who made completely forgettable pop metal. Not classic rock.
The question is, can you admit when you're wrong?
