It's a wonder anyone doesn't use ad blockers

I've been using Adblock plus on Firebox as well as Chrome for a very long time now. Long enough to forget how bad and annoying adds have become on the web.

Recently for some reason my ad block has been screwing up and stops working. I've re-installed it a few times but it keeps fucking up. Not sure what's up with that, but damn did I get a shock at how bad and intrusive ads have become on the web.

You can't watch a video most places with out pop ups in the vid while you are watching it. I can deal with commercials before a vid, that's reasonable IMO, but I don't want to be annoyed with little flash pop ups during the vid.

Same with pictures on forums. While I don't see them here at GFY, but many of the mainstream surfer forums I visit are crammed with ads that pop up on embedded images.

Quite honestly I don't understand why the fuck people don't use ad blockers at this point. It's one thing to advertise but most sites these days look like fucking 1990's banner farms.

It's no wonder people don't buy shit anymore, they have become immune to banners & ads due to having way too many being shoved in their face.

I wonder if the proliferation of ad blockers has caused companies & webmasters to create/publish more ads as a response.

i'll never understand how someone in this industry can use ad blockers. Nothing to do with principle, just a matter of how does one check their work properly?

Not sure but I think you can configure some ad blockers to block or unblock ads on certain domains.

ok fair enough.

Maybe I just have a different perspective then. I tend to use viewing ads as a research tool. I think it's a solid way to develop ideas or consider new products to market. I've been in and around online marketing for about 16 years now and even still pick up ideas this way.

I use two browsers. One with adblock for my day to day surfing. One without to check stuff. Simple really!

I know how to bypass adblock so no need to turn it off Also, one of the reason why i use adblock is gfy ad system-it is just too annoying to see same banners over and over.I would preffer if there would be some sort of paid directory where advertisers would be able to post short info what they offer instead just banner.Or text links with description instead banners.

I've always been against pop ups and annoying methods of advertisement. Honestly, if it annoys me I'm not pushing it on surfers.. However, I no longer deal with surfers much anyway, I sell on 3rd party sites which generate the surfers for me.

yeah, fuck trying whatever it is you can to make a sale on free videos, how annoying. If only every video I want to watch on the internet was ad free. Why do people try to monetize shit they can give away for free? They should be giving MORE away for free, bigger, longer, faster, harder, better, higher - all to please me, the surfer, getting an experience for free already.

My thoughts exactly. I've never turned off any advertising simply because I make my living in online marketing and want to keep a pulse on what's going on, particularly new and cutting edge methods/banners that may inspire an idea. There's been many occasions where I've taken a mainstream advertising idea I ran across and applied it successfully to adult, something that would have never happened had I been using an ad blocker.

You actually look at the gfy banners? I couldn't tell you the last gfy banner I remembered, I'm so auto focused on scrolling down to the start of the thread, to ever look at the banner. Banner/text advertising in the middle of threads would be much more effective here.

I use Chrome and have a special plug in to block the ads in Gmail. Otherwise, I have trained myself to ignore ads for the most part.

However, I question how effective this is. The ad I see the most is for Hawaiian Airlines. I check out airfares on the Hawaiian Airlines website weekly, so that's a waste of someone's money. The second ad I see the most is for Jeep. I have a brand new Jeep, and I will not be buying another car for some time now - so again, that's wasted money. The ad I see the most is for Ferrari, but I am not about to buy a Ferrari any time soon.

Kind of a waste.

The idea that industry insiders want to see what's happening with ads, as they pertain to the competition, is valid.

The idea that 99.9% of surfers are NOT industry insiders, is also valid.

Giving away boatloads of free porn without ads doesn't make any sense... you would be better off just selling it.

Imagine that....

Dude.. that is dead BALLS ON targeted. Those ads are there because of your surfing habits. They may not get you today... they may not get you tomorrow... but eventually they may. I can't even honestly comprehend how you think that you seeing ads for things that have directly affected your/your family's life as a stupid thing to do? They are wasting money? I'm fucking puzzled...

the discussion should be on how to stop ad blockers, not how great they are..

they cause as much damage as any file locker or tube site ever will... good luck making $$ when as many as 10% of your surfers can't see ads...

You should see the sites in poland man... one of the biggest news sites here, onet.pl - you click one of their video stories and you have to watch a 2,5 minute ad to watch a 30 second video. 300x250 video banners that play very loudly without warning... all the major sites here are completely unusable without adblock.

Allegro.pl until recently had a skyscraper at the top which loaded AFTER the rest of the page loads, so you are hovering over a navigation link and suddenly the whole page shifts down 100px right as you about to click - EVERY GODDAMN TIME.

That's because they're Polish.

What sites do you visit that you're SO inundated with ads?

I've never used an ad blocker and don't really see why I'd need one.

Yeah everyone who says they use adblocks say the ads on the sites they visit are so intrusive and this is my very question... What sites do you visit that are like this? I rarely ever see in your face ads or anything that isn't easily ignored on my part...

Anybody who works online making a living off free sites should never use products that harm their business...

Tube sites? Nope... File lockers? Nope... 10,000,000+ users using an adblock on a single browser (of 3 major browsers)? Yep...

Not porn sites.. I'm talking mainstream, when I surf for things that interest me. You have to look at things from the surfers perspective if you want to sell to them. Just looking at the webmaster side of things gives you only half the picture.

If you go to any decent forum these days half of them straight up hammer you with various web ads any time someone inserts a picture in a post it will have a little flash ad attached to it. It's annoying as fuck so that means no way in hell am I going to do that to my own surfers.

Videos are another one..As I mentioned in the 1st post, I have no issues with watching a commercial at the start or even at various points in a long video. However it's crossing the line when they have pop ups in the video it's self that you have to close to see the video.

This is the shit that pushes people to use ad blockers and hurts everyone.

Surely it's not hard with a script to see if a client/browser has adblock installed? Someone post the method.

Yeah, so then tell them they have to disable it on your site since you rely on ad revenue or they can look at a picture of dirt or grass only.

that wasn't really a discussion as much as it was you embarrassing yourself by trying to convince others that if more people use ad blockers more people would go to your pay sites.

how do you advertise your sites again? Door to door?

On my cheep ass free site, I've changed the folder names not to say affiliate and I renamed most of the banners.
My Firefox's adblock plus doesn't recognize any keywords rendering my ads unblockable.
Though my pop-ups & pop-unders are blocked by Chrome.

i disabled flash to stop ads that start blabbing on automatically. i think that should be enough for most people but i can't really blame surfers for using things like adblock. people have gotten very aggressive with their advertising tactics.

You actually look at the gfy banners? I couldn't tell you the last gfy banner I remembered, I'm so auto focused on scrolling down to the start of the thread, to ever look at the banner. Banner/text advertising in the middle of threads would be much more effective here.
Well, since normaly i have them removed,i cant ignore them if adblock extension is not functioning Especialy that one which appear on reply. And yes banners in threads is quite often on many boards, seems they didnt heard about that yet here .
