Only 150 of 3500 U.S. Colleges Are Worth the Investment

Considering the costs of 'higher education'.... ouch.

That average student loan balance for a 25-year-old is $20,326, according to the Federal Reserve of New York. Student debt is second largest source of U.S. household debt, after only mortgages.

Bennett assessed the ?return on investment? for the 3500 colleges and universities in the country. He found that returns were positive for only 150 institutions. The top 10 schools ranked by Bennett as having the best "ROI" are below (for the full list he used, click here, and for the latest figures, click here):

California Institute of Technology
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
Stanford University
Princeton University
Harvard University
Dartmouth College
Duke University
University of Pennsylvania
University of Notre Dame

He found college is ?worth it? if you get into a top tier university like Stanford, or study an in-demand field like nuclear engineering at even a lower tier school.

that's one way to look at it. the roi in terms of getting a job right after graduation that will pay off a student loan.

on the other hand, many of us went to college to expand our minds, the experience,etc. and paid for it in full at that time.

college isn't specifically for cranking out engineers and such.

College is for people that want to work for someone else in the corporate workplace. You are very unlikely to move past being a worker grunt at any major corporation in the US with out having a college education.

It's very stupid, but that's the way it works in this country. If you want to work for yourself then college is pointless. However if you intend to work for someone else, college is a evil necessity to move forward.

How many have flunked out of adult/online since 2008 and had to return the fry-o-lator?

It sounds like more people need a degree in 'crystal balls' to be able to predict their future and plan accordingly. Making such broad stroke ASSumptions and predictions for your livelihood for the 10/20/40 years of your (and family's) life would appear to be misguided as you never know what the future may hold.

What grade did you get in reading comprehension? I said our system of higher education is fucked up. Having the "best" schools is great but it needs to be assessable. Tuition is ridiculously high, and is getting higher, and student loan debt has surpassed credit card debt. Until Obama put a stop to it, big banks were actually making high-interest school loans to students, and if the student defaulted on the loan, the taxpayers picked up the tab! All the profit, none of the risk. Unbelievable.

All the school debt is putting a drag on the economy. It's a big, multifaceted fucking mess.

That is the risk of going into business for yourself. You risk not knowing what your future might bring 3, 4 or 10 years from now.

Going to college gives you some piece of paper that allows you a somewhat more secure but perhaps less rewarding future if you choose to work for someone else. If you want to be part of the worker bee force then you should get a college education. It's just that simple.

You can run your own small business and be successful with out a college education and almost no fortune 500 company would hire you into management, but they would hire a collage grad student.

College and university graduates earn more in their lifetime than the people with no college or university degrees, I would say college is for winners, you know, the guys that bone hot girls and drive fast cars

yeah, the cost of tertiary education in the US is unbearable, wait, no it isn't, population with tertiary education 42%, 4th in the World??? Nooo, say it ain't so

there are so many more rewards to gain from college than a piece of paper. it's not for everyone, but to fully discount college misses many of the benefits.

learning how to learn, working on complicated projects within a team, how to set, stick to, and accomplish long-term goals. etc.

not to mention learning many of the fundamentals of business ownership, such as accounting principles.

critical thinking.

tons of value there for many many people.
