Don't Be Quick to be worried about China

Was listening to marketplace today. They were interviewing farmer ad his wife whose 15 year old son had just been diagnosed with a horrible form of cancer.

Doctors traced back to water/food supply. Chinese soil btw, is considered a state secret, people are forbidden to discuss contents of it.

Anyway, the farmer showed the interviewer the sludge like water filling the rice patties. A yellowish/grey nasty looking sludge.

The farmer: "We know its bad water. Contaminated. We can't eat this rice, its not good. So we sell to another province." This is happening all over China.

Think about that statement for a moment.

Asia is a mess. Pollution, total corruption, and a general total lack of respect for life and the environment is taking its toll on the region, especially in China. This area of the world will probably be a hazardous wasteland in 100 years (or less) at the rate things are going.

The "West" can "win" by simply stalling. Their own environment will destroy them.

Its so corrupt man. Worse than here it seems. I had an Asian friend say to me recently. "You western guys dont get it. We're bad people. Worse than you" He said that while smiling innocently.

In addition to all the current corruption and nonsense that takes place, take a look back through history at the atrocities that have happened over here, some not too long ago (Cambodia / Burma), to see what they will do. Not to mention all the little stories that are blips in the media about horrible happenings in China, or ethic cleansing in Burma right now. Asians are just slightly better than Africans when it comes to corruption and violence. It's easier and cheaper to kill someone than it is to try to work out a problem. SE Asians seem to be the absolute worse for this.

That said, there are also a lot of wonderful people. But like anywhere, the bad always get the press and ruin it for everyone else. No one ever reports on all the good people or acts of kindness and generosity. Unfortunately, those are also the ones who get exploited by the bad ones (and their governments).

If American consumers and environmentalists demanded other countries adhere to the same strict standards and associated costs that are demanded from manufactures at home a lot of this would not happen.

We demand American manufactures meet very strict and expensive environmental standards here but don't give a fuck about what happens in other countries.

We demand minimum wages, benefits and safe working conditions here but don't give a shit about workers in other countries.

Our demand for artificially cheap products drives this abuse of workers and the earth.

In a very direct way we are responsible for the shitty conditions abroad … But that's ok ….. "look what I saved shopping at walmart"

he has a point though. there was a huge testing of rice a while back and every single sample came back with traces (or more) or arsenic. they said this was due to all the decades of using it as pesticide in china.

I believe in the US and Canada we are still manufacturing pesticides which are banned for use in our own countries, but we export them and still buy food back from the same countries... how's that for smart.

I was speaking about the "attitude." Not the product. If they can imagine selling rotten rice, cell phones that explode, office chairs that explode...and have no issue with ethnic cleansing, polluting environments...the country is in very very bad shape and seems to get worse daily.

You speak the truth. Last time I was in Thailand I toured the country with a singer and activist. Part of the ad carabou clan. Met many beautiful and helpful and kind people. People helping people. I know good people are out there. We try to be good people and know a few like you, here and there.

I also met some horny as shit Thai girls...and I miss them every day.

Closer to launch, dwb. will be gone from here before summer.

China is good on paper. It'll fall apart eventually because the facade won't hold up.
