Anyone here using an SSHD - hybrid drive?

Go with a a full SSD ...... SSD is faster btw

Yeah, that is what I currently have.. the 120gb Samsung --- and I like it.

But I'd love to be able to go back to a 1 terabyte drive for my laptop.

The SSHD hydrid 1tb is just $120

I wouldn't downgrade if you are already on SSD....

If anything the prices are ok now to make the jump upwards to 520 gb and then they got the 900 or so gb SSD's now..

stick with the SSD. the hybrid drive will not come close in comparison. Sure, it will kick the hell out of a standard 7200rpm hdd, but it will NOT perform like a real SSD. the hybrids are good for people who can't afford to spend cash on 120/128gb SSD's but still want better performance then a standard 7200rpm hdd and more space then a standard ssd..

If possible you could keep the ssd and pull out your DVD drive and add an extra 1tb drive into that space - pretty common thing these days. You can always get an external USB DVD if you need it.

It's a hybrid.. Not a full blown SSD..

Not 1TB and $7 more then $120, but same concept.

I've used a few of the the Seahgate momentus 250g drives. Obviously nowhere near as fast as a real SSD, in fact I would not say it is any faster than any other performance-oriented 7200 drive. What I like about it is the low power and silent operation, and great price to capacity... Of course, I bought them when they first came out, and SSD prices have dropped since then.

I have Seagate Momentus XT 500GB in some of our sales staff's notebooks, because they need the extra Space.

It don't boot as fast as a SSD(logic) but its almost as fast when its running and your applications is cached on the SSD part. But only "almost". The access time is noticeable longer, and as soon as you need to read from the large disk, you notice the difference.

If you only Work in Office documents, or surf the web, you will get a lot of bang for the bucks, since it will have no problem storing that on the cache

But all people here, hat don't need the extra Space, have 120-240 GB SSD disks instead, because its so much faster and the batteries much longer. Most people have Intel models (320,510,520) but we have tested the Samsun 830 and 840 models, because they are much cheaper. On paper and in theory, they are slower, but you cant feel the difference IRL, unless you run a SQL server or do Video editing.

If you don't need the space, get a Intel 520 SSD
If you want a larger SSD but don't have the money, get a large Samsung SSD
If you need 1tb of space in a notebook, get the Hybrid
