SPAMMERS - Look out!

American Online and Microsoft are sending lawyers after spammers, with AOL seeking tough anti-spam legislation and Microsoft filing a lawsuit against unnamed defendants.

AOL and Microsoft are seeking stiff jail sentences for spammers who misrepresent themselves.

In a message to its members, AOL said on Thursday, "We are outraged that our kids are being exposed to vile porn spam online. We are fed up with spam and we HATE it as much as you do!" The company added, "At AOL, we believe the most egregious spammers shouldn't be staring at computer screens, they should be staring at jail bars."

Microsoft, meanwhile, filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court last week against unnamed defendants accused of harvesting e-mail addresses from its Hotmail servers with the intention of spamming subscribers. The "John Doe" suit allows Microsoft to conduct discovery in the case, including issuing subpoenas.

Haven't read that article but unfortunately SPAM can not be stopped.
Even if all US spammers go to jail, it will mean simply more money for Russian spammers.

Never say never. When it gets so bad it HAS to be stopped, it will be stopped. What if it cost the senders one cent for every email they send? I think the government would love to have an excuse to levy a tax like that. Spammers are giving it to them.

It would be easy. Just like snail mail, if you dont buy a stamp first, your mail doesnt get delivered.

With today's email protocols that'd never be possible. It'd mean destroying the current e-mail system and starting everyone from scratch. I don't think anyone would go for that.

Everyone who has to dump 90% of their email because of spam will go for it. I know I would. And it wouldnt mean destroying the current system, just charging for it.

Many admins run things like SPEWS on their system, throwing in sendmail rules to check paid delivery would be easy, cross check a receipt header against an RDNS and presto.

SPAM needs to be stopped, it is way out of control. I have no sympathy for spammers and would support any sanction against them.

My mail server, my rules. SPEWS is the best thing we have at the moment, it must be good cos Spammers hate it.

I am sure there are religious rights out there who would want to see an adult webmaster sentenced to jail time also; AND how would you like to have yourself to be at the end of the stick. Not funny I can assure you.
