What does ASIC really consist of? Are they all the same? (BTcoin thread)

I remember from the old days for hacking direcTV you could not use a regular smart card because it didn't have an asic ... does that mean that old directv cards with an asic could be useful for btcoin mining?

I apologize in advance if that is a stupid question

an asic chip is a chip designed to do one thing, the thing it is programmed for. so i guess you cant use your card for mining
