Who is in this biz for the long haul? Who is in it for the short gain?

Who actually hopes to make a career out of this biz?

Who here hopes to just make some cash to get through school and find a "real" job?

I posted this on another board after someone stated they hoped to not be in this biz in 5 years

I'm 36 years old, done just about everything you can imagine in the employment sector.

Worked in the commercial/film production market for 5 years in Los Angeles, managed fast food restauraunts for 7, I've worked for the Six Flags Amusement Park for 5 started as a technician in the games department (specifically asst. foreman over the arcade shop), and had a few odd jobs here and there...anyway my point is I've worked for other people, and other people suck.

I spent 7 prime years of my life working up to 70 hours a week for the Taco Bell corporation, pushing so hard to make my store the #1 in growth only to be making someone else rich.

While at the same time seeing less of my family and friends.

I now work just as hard, and at times the hours are just as long.

But I can get up and walk away from my desk and see my family who is just in the other room. I work in comfortable attire, mainly shorts t-shirt and I hate to wear fucking shoes.
Hell sometimes I'm not even wearing the shorts Boxer briefs baby.

The money is good and gets better all the time.

The ideas that I come up with benefit me and my partner directly, sometimes they work sometimes they don't, but when they do I see the benefits.

I don't have to worry about some Distric Manager screwing me out of my raise, and I don't have to worry about some fucked up corporate formula screwing me out of my bonus.

If this is what you want, or think is all that is out there then by all means go for it, just leaves more room for the rest of us to grow richer

I'm here for the long haul - it's a job, pure and simple.

I do want to branch out though - probably another brick-and-motar business again to compliment it.

agreed, nothing better than working in your reeking boxers and occasionally enjoying a blowjob while you work..

                LOL

I think I was born for porn, man it's been in my blood for as long as I can remember.

My mother will tell you that she caught me with an older cousins playboy at a very early age and I cried when she took it away...I'm talking about being 3 or 4 years old...and for those who think that's young I was reading the newspaper by the time I was 5.

I think I've just fought my inner instinct, if I would have acted on it before I would have gotten into this biz in it's internet infancy...but alas I pretended to be one of those upstanding types

I mean if it's working out, and you're doing well what reason would there be to leave?

Is it you don't like the biz? What we do in the biz? Is it a moral thing, religious thing? etc..just wondering.

I used to think I was in it for the short gain. When I was a freshman in high school I started spamming on AOL to make some money for the weekends. By my senior year I had developed software that would make me $1200 in a day easy if I wanted to. I thought that I'd just enjoy the ride and when spamming wasnt possible anymore I'd just get a job. Then I realized that I love the porn industry. Half of me loves the money, but half of me just loves the fact that so many people see what I do. It's almost like art. I can walk around college and thing that just maybe someone around here saw a gallery or a free site or fucked the shit out of an escort that they purchased through one of my sponsors. It's a good feeling.

                              Amen brother!

You and I think quite alike.

Personally I would like to work in the adult biz for another 5 years or so then have enough invested in rental income properties and financial investments that I can live comfortably off that for the rest of my life.

I will still work of course but this will allow me to focus my life on doing things I really want to do. Such as travelling, working towards attaining a masters degree and enjoying life the way it is meant to be enjoyed. Not slaving away working in some office making piddly wages and kissing corporate ass so I can just get that 5-6% bonus at the end of the year.

I honestly believe if I can make it, anyone can. It's all a question of their motivation, discipline and work ethic.

i don't like having to worry about getting ripped off. doesn't happen much, but it always sticks with you and i hate it. i don't like the long term outlook for this industry for a variety of reasons. i've been pretty much part time in this industry since i started.

i really want to get into either investment banking(specifically mergers & acquisitions) or venture capitol. currently working my way through the cfa program. writing the level 2 in may.

I'm in it for the long run. I've yet to see the adult business evolve once again, and since I still have a few more years of freedom to go, I'll be part of the biz.

Yeah I agree with you as well...if I did leave the biz it would only because I had enough to retire on.
but like you I would not quit working, I would do something to keep me busy whether that was jsut travelling to interesting places, continuing my education as well, or setting up one of those vanity brick and mortars like collector shop guys do...no one ever buys anything there but it's a cool place to check out. ;)

I'm all about growth, in my biz life as well as my personal life. I'm like a shark I have to continue to move in order to live...if I stopped and just sat around and did nothing and watch t.v., I might as well put a gun in my mouth...LOL

I agree...that's why I put the real part in quotation marks.

I think some people are in this biz as a sideline for some extra cash for beer in college...that's cool...but I think some of these people don't see this a a real job or a respectable job.

They are waiting for something better to come along and once it does will drop porn like a hot potato...just wondering who fits in what category and why.

Been working the AudioText angle for 13 years, on the web since '97 and this is how I'll be earning my fortune for the next 20 years unless somthing disasterous happens or I sell out for some serious dollars.

There's nothing like being your own boss, I decide what's urgent (almost nothing) and what to ignore. I choose who to deal with and when. I used to be an accountant, what a crock that was.

Anybody that gives up this life to take a straight job is in for a big bad surprise.

The real question for affiliates like myself is 'which adult websites are in this for the long run'? I've far to often dedicated all my traffic to a site that converts then they just give up and run off to Jamaica with the money they've made leaving their sites unupdated and loosing me every one of my hard earned rebills. Any suggestions here are well appreciated.

My point is, it sucks when any of them decide to stop doing their jobs and I loss all my hard earned work sending them members in the first place. It would be better to only promote those sites whichare known to be in this for the 'long haul' and therefor I know my investment is a good one.

My point is, it sucks when any of them decide to stop doing their jobs and I loss all my hard earned work sending them members in the first place. It would be better to only promote those sites whichare known to be in this for the 'long haul' and therefor I know my investment is a good one.
I agree entirely. To be honest these days I mainly push either my own stuff, people I both know and trust or companies that have been around forever and look like being here when the world ends.

However, like any business you take risks. The trick is simply to work in a way that makes any risk acceptable even if the outcome is bad. If you don't like or can't handle the risk factor of being your own boss then the suit and tie are a calling...

I work with a lot of webmasters - mostly "newbies" (been in the business a year or less) but also some veterans. They work their asses off and don't see anything for it. Or the only time they *can* see anything for it is when they're getting $1 freeezinebucks signups, and they think "What's the use?"
There's a vet on my team who's been in the biz 5 years. She used to make money hand over fist, but in the past year she's made maybe 10 sales. Working much harder now than she used to, but she's not seeing any rewards.

The folks I work with don't spam, don't cheat; they just build like there's no tomorrow... and out of about 60 of them, I'd say only 10 are seeing any real return. The others are just hanging on hoping things will pick up.

Those are the folks who are likely to get out sooner rather than later - they've never seen a $1,000 check and honestly, they never expect to.

Worked as a bartender, had a cleaning company and now am in college getting my BBA.

I have seen checks over $1,000 per week, and frankly dont want this to be my full time job EVER! Because I like to be around ppl, not in front of a comp all day. I have almost enough money to make a big investment in real estate that will let me live good for a very long time.

Not bad for an 18yr old?

Thats why I'm never gonna go full time. I'm staying part time landscaping in the outdoors and get exercise, yes I like being a landscaper. I would never let myself go like that.

Firstly, wanted to say that this is a good thread.

Carrie made some good points. My personal situation is that I know I don't want to work for other people. I'm a "Self-Employed" type of person, so I rather work alone or with a partner, not with someone above me.

My background is in Marketing and in PC Networking. I hated office politics, I hated corporate fakes, and I despised working hard and seeing that positive results only helped the higher ups, not myself or my peers.

Will I be in the Industry for the long haul? That I don't know. My business is Marketing. Adult entertainment is a product for me. I don't want to come in here and follow the masses, I want to innovate a little and be at the forefront. I want to set something up here that will work on it's own and I can then move on to other ventures, either in the industry or outside. Wherever the opportunities are.

I don't do this for the love of porn, I do it because Porn is a challenging environment because people are very innovative and react quickly.

You know Teen Kelly converts like crazy.

If you plan to do it for any length of time then pushing traffic to your own sites is the most stable way of making a living. I do hope to make the internet my career but something in mainstream.
