I always found that era so fascinating. how they are still very advanced in terms of mankind's accomplishments and capabilities, an economy that allowed people to prosper, people had respect, worked hard and had beautiful homes to show for it when they did, had good family values (usually) and sooo much less unhealthy distractions for their children. They seemed to enjoy life more than we do now..

I feel the same way about that era - simpler better more civilized times. WWII changed the world and may have changed the United States more than any other country.

We are such slobs today. Looking at everybody dressed nicely, well groomed, very few fatsos - seems like they had self control and more self respect. We inherited a renewed sense of freedom through WWII, perhaps too much freedom.

i wouldn't be so sure about that. back then everything sold in america was made in america. now we export our pollution machines to third world countries.

everyone has this idea that this was some idealistic time and while i agree to some extent you've also got to keep in mind that duing this time the KKK and the like were huge. black men were lynched and hung on a regular basis. getting away with murder was much easier. you've got to wonder what the underground was like back then. its horrible now but there is also so much technology to catch them. back then there was almost nothing. it sure does look cool though watching that clip.

Interesting video -- that what my father's word he was a student at NYU in 1939.

The world was hardly an idyllic place, the Nazis were busy conquering Europe. My father volunteered for the Army right after Perl Harbor. By 1942 most of my uncles were drafted.

In 1939 the blitzkrieg was rolling and Europe was in flames -- it must have sucked to be a young man then.

We complain of our lives but viewing this video makes me glad my time is now.

My grandma and her siblings when not in school spent long hours farming and always referred to those as the good old days. In 1939 she was 18, had a job at a drug store cafe and just starting her fun times

Seeing old clips is enough for me, I too am so glad to be in this era. Wouldn't it be awesome to be able to know what people 80 years from now think of OUR era? Will our lives seem as simple to them as we see those 80 ago?

sure it was happier because they didn't know any better. the severe lack of information about what was happening in the world and even their state was huge. today we know everything (or most things), so its much easier to be cynical.

No it wasn't. In 1939 the air quality in a big city like New York was MUCH worse than it is today.

Cars were much more polluting than they are today...but the real big problem with the air in a big city in 1939 was COAL.
That was THE fuel that everyone used for heating.

That's why in the 1900's up until the 1980's big cities were so horribly polluted in the air.
Today the air quality overall, even in small towns, is much better than it was during the big industrial era.

I know it sounds crazy...but Google it up for youself and check the stats on it.

The Tuskegee Institute has recorded 3,446 blacks and 1,297 whites were lynched between 1882 and 1968.

of course i'm not diminishing the act but lynchings were not as common as most people think and it was confined to the South and Old West.
